Windows 10: Cortana Window is broken, not working in default user account

In my default user account, Cortana is not working. When I click Cortana icon, it opens, but it neither responds to you, nor the buttons on it respond. It kind of hangs. After a few seconds, it disappears.


The hang isssue also affects the Window we see when we type something in search box. The search works, but when you click outside of search Window, it should disappear, but IT DOESN'T, unless you click on Windows Start button.


Now, I don't want answers like try checking speech, try creating another user account. I've tried it in other account and it is working fine. Also, there's no speech issue. I can perfectly record things on my PC. It's just Cortana that most probably doesn't respond.


I've re registered Cortana, restarted Cortana, nothing works.


Also, there's a leaf icon along with Cortana process in Task Manager (Could that be a issue)?

My current Windows version is 1903.


How do I fix it?

I suggest you to follow below steps to turn off Cortana’s personalization:

• 
  Go to Cortana >
  Notebook > About Me.
  
• 
  Click to select your
  Microsoft account.
  
• 
  On the Account page, click again to select your Microsoft account.
  
• Select Sign out and restart the system, again sign in back and check.

I suggest you to install all the available Windows updates and check the issue.

Also, I suggest you to check the issue in other user accounts if you have any. If you don't have other user accounts, then I suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue persists.

Lost my default user account


My default user account is not listed during startup; only the Guest account called Windows User is available.

Earlier, I was trying to find my Microsoft account, but don't think I was successful. I entered a password I had used years ago with the Microsoft Community, but it was incorrect. I'm not sure what I would see if I had opened my Microsoft account. I guess something happened.

I shut down and restarted my computer and to my surprise I was asked for a password. I don't recall what happened when I originally set up the computer, but would have eliminated the password, if possible. I fiddled around, not sure what to do, and accidentally selected Windows User when I started the computer again. Now I'm not asked, and Windows User is automatically used.

My default account is still on the computer. I started with Administrator privileges, and ran C:\WINDWS\system32>net user and it is listed as the default account (WDAGUtilityAccount is listed under the Default Account heading). Windows User is the guest account.

I attempted to use System Restore from the Windows User Account but it was off. Since it is a different account, it probably would not have helped.
Any suggestions? Jim

 

Windows 10 Deployment: Broken Cortana and Search functions


Hi All,
Been pulling my hair out for months working with this OS and MDT. I'm creating a master image (Golden) on a virtual machine and when the software for our organization is installed, and a test user logs into the Virtual machine for the first time, Cortana and search are disabled. Logs also show errors with initializing "Search". Here are my image build steps:
-Install OS, log into machine with default Administrator account
-Create a local administrator account. Log off of "built-In" admin account.
-Log in with "new" local administrator account.
-Install updates. Rename and join computer to domain
-Log into VM with a default domain account (Used to customize apps for domain users). Install and configure apps.
-Log off domain account. Log in with "new" local admin account
-Copy domain user account profile to the "Default" profile. Use regedit to load "Default" hive. Remove references of domain account"
-Remove domain account SID and user folder.
-Remove VM from domain
-Sysprep, and Shutdown.
When I use a domain joined account to log into the VM, Cortana and Search is disabled. When I log into the machine as the newly created "Admin" account. Search and Cortana work as expected. For some reason it seems to be permissions related to the "Apps" folder, but Im not sure. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
