Windows 10: Create a storage space with parity redundancy in a USB enclosure?

Hello, how are you?
I am wanting to create a storage pool with parity redundancy in windows 10 storage spaces with 3 drives.
2 for data and one for parity.
I will be wanting to be able to later expand the pool by adding more data drives as the storage needs increase.
To have flexibility I am looking at using an external USB3 JBOD enclosure.
The model I am considering is the ICY BOX IB-3810U3.

This is a JBOD enclosure, so even if it is populated with 10 drives, it will show the 10 drives individually in the OS.
So I think it is possible to create the pool and run it from the enclosure.
How will the single 5 gbps usb 3 connection handle it?
Will it work with good performance?

Windows 10 Storage Spaces Improvements?

Are you using 3 column parity? This is the default setting for parity spaces in the Windows 8.1 GUI. If so, this is the reason for your high overhead. 3 column single-parity incurrs a 50% storage overhead (1 parity shard for every 2 data shards)

This makes sense for small pools containing 3 or 4 physical disks. However it is a poor choice with 14 physical disks.

In your case I suggest a 12 column dual-parity space. This means 2 parity shards for every 10 data shards. This will allow for recovery from two drive failures and give only a 20% storage overhead.

Unfortunately the Windows 8.1 GUI is too basic to allow creation of such a space. You need to use Powershell. You can create such a space on your existing storage pool and move data to it from your existing parity space. As you move the data your free space
will increase.

 

Storage Spaces capacity error

3TB drives don't hold 3TB of storage, it's around 2.5-2.75 TB, so let's say 20 TB of space.

For that many drives I believe 2 of your drives will be set aside for Parity. So minus 5TB.

So total around 15TB of usable space.

That's just rough calculating in my head. Actual values can make it slightly different.

Also, Storage Spaces is going to report the raw storage capacity that your Pool is capable of. So if you setup a Parity Storage the parity it going to take up some of that raw storage, but to the overarching Storage Space that's just available data. It doesn't
care how you format it, Simple, Parity, etc.
