Windows 10: Create Desktop Shortcut of Website in Google Chrome

Do you have an "Apps" icon on the far left of the bookmarks bar in Chrome?

Google Keep is a Chrome extension that you installed that is responsible for those being in Apps.

You can remove any of the items in Apps if wanted though.

 

No mate it is on the taskbar and I ma now thinking because I use Keep originally on my Samsung S Tablet it has just transferred over.

 

Hmm just a thought Cliff I have just checked a couple of machines and the cookies have indeed got a lot less stored than I know there were and I am wondering if it is because Google Chrome is saving the site logins that the cookies have been removed??

The Seven and Ten Forum login cookies are there and they have been the very ones that have been driving me nuts. .

It may best to clear the cookies for the sites giving you an issue in case they have expired or are corrupted, and update the site's credentials if prompted by Chrome when you log in to the sites next.

 

I'm surprised that still works at all. it is no longer supported and hasn't been for some time.

 

Yes well I used ti as the memo app I was using I accidentally deleted on my phone and this (Keep) was across platforms and has been real good up to now where it seems to have gone down some proverbial toilet somewhere.

Anyway I am going to find an encrypted way of doing it and just attach it to all my devices surely it could not fall over?? OR could it?

 

When I Create the Shortcuts as specified they are created; however, when I click the shortcut it always takes me to my Google Home Page in Chrome. Until about 6 months the created shortcuts would take me to the page/site where they were created. Then that stopped occurring and all new shortcuts take me to the Home Page. This happens os all 5 of my computers. It may be something I did 6 months ago, but don't recall what I did, and since they are all synced the situation replicates across all machines.

I just tested this in the latest version of Chrome to see if any changes may have been made, and it still works as in the tutorial for me.

Did you check the "Open as windows" box when you created the shortcut to not have any other tabs open when you use the shortcut?

 

Brink, I tried it both checked and unchecked, no difference. It obviously came from some setting somewhere in Chrome. Shortcuts in EDGE and IE work fine. I have talked to friends that are using Chrome and do not have the same issue.

 

Just tried it on my new laptop. I created a shortcut to this site and it worked fine. Then I created shortcuts to Chase and Citi. These two took me to my homepage, Google.

 

I tested with Credit Card, Mortgage, Banking, Auto | Chase Online | Chase.com, and it worked as it should for me.

As a test, create a website shortcut using the command below for your 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10 to see how it may work for you.

You would substitute the URL in red below with the URL you want instead.

"%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" Credit Card, Mortgage, Banking, Auto | Chase Online | Chase.com

64-bit

I create all my shortcuts by entering the URL and they work fine that way & I have a folder with FavIcons for the created shortcuts. This is the same as the URL you proposed and my manually created shortcuts always open in Chrome since that is the default browser. What I want is to be able to click on More Tools + Add to Desktop and have the created Icon shortcut take me to the web page versus my home page. This is easier and also results in shortcuts with site-specific graphics versus the generic Chrome icon.

 

You could try resetting Chrome to default to see how it works afterwards.
