Creators Update - Discussion of new changes and quirks

After updating 10x PCs i've noticed the following oddities:-

    1. PC1 (my main machine) Win 10 Mail app now works & it hasn't done this for ages!
    2. 1x Dell SFF PC & 1x Dell Laptop have grey logon screen & shutdown backgrounds. These still show the white circular dots thing though! All other PCs have the original blue background.
    3. All machines had 'Power Options' (shortcuts) Pinned to the right side of the start menu along with shortcuts to internal HHDs. When upgrading PC1, which i did first, these also appeared in the Programs list on the left!
    4. On all PCs i no longer have the Windows printer app for my Brother MFC-J6520, but i still have it for a much older MFC-235C.
    5. One Dell notebook's Track pad driver had to be removed & reinstalled due to lagging issues. Another identical machine did not have this issue.

PC1 was the only machine to be upgraded to the CrU via the Win 10 Upgrade Assistant. All others were done with a USB stick created with the Media Creation tool. This was a lengthy process as all had to be downgraded from Enterprise to Pro version first & then put back on Enterprise.

I don't pretend to know the answer to any of these, but it has been interesting.....

Another Annoying issue is the App and Features app in settings, that goes along with Programs and features in control panel. I can go to control panel and uninstall programs and have no issues, but in the new app, it prompts a UAC trying to run Rundll32.exe, and the program fails to uninstall due to it gives an error saying that the program may have already been uninstalled.

Not cool at all. Always a buggy initial release. Why not just keep things where people know their at, and know it works and just leave it alone. I don't get it.

try iobit uninstaller, its free version removes software and residue. I use it regularly. B ut. like alpha says, no probs here removing the apps I dont want. I recently did a virgin install of 10, originally it had gone in over 8 and 8.1. I was told, rightly or wrongly, that that can cause problems with residual files. Maybe thats why creator went in so easily. I did run this morning a driver checker programme, it told me I had a missing driver, it installed it for me. No idea what it was, it might have been an nvidia sound file.

    That's interesting.
I wonder if 1703 may also have killed off the ability to activate a clean installation with a Windows 7/8.x product key on computers which have never had Windows 10 before?

This is incorrect - all upgrades are mandatory for Home/PRO at least. You have to take active steps to prevent it but in the end silly as the build will not get any support after a while creating a security risk.

You can still activate with a 7/8 key. Actually this is a good change as it should mean you no longer get caught in the trap that it clean installs home even if you want to install pro.

Thanks - hadn't seen that anyone had tried that with the official 1703 ISOs yet (given they've only been released a few days ago).
Yes I'm typing this on a machine which came with Windows 8 Core, but back when there was a glut of Windows 8 Pro upgrades around, I found an office supplies firm which was also selling off Windows 8 Pro Packs at a decent price. So this machine had a legit Windows 8 Pro licence and is now on Windows 10 Pro. And it could do with a clean install sometime soon.

You have to take active steps to prevent it but in the end silly as the build will not get any support after a while creating a security risk. This is one area where changes have been made to what was Pro's vaguely worded 'defer updates' option. Now it explicitly lets you choose between being on Current Branch or Current Branch for Business, plus features updates can be deferred for up to 365 days. Quality updates (cumulative updates and the like) can be deferred for up to 30 days.

There also a 'Pause updates' switch that temporarily pauses all updates for up to seven days.

Alphanumeric, are you using a direct upgrade from Version 1607 to 1703 or a clean install?

I did a direct upgrade on 3 PCs and all of them do it, especially trying to uninstall NVIDIA software. My display drivers needed reinstalled due to an issue with GeForce Experience.

On the other 2 machines, when I uninstall NVIDIA software, UAC says it's RunDll32.exe asking to run, but points to the program being uninstalled, so it ends up working.

I've done both, upgrades and clean installs, and no issues uninstalling from Apps & features.
