I found this happening on both my laptops (both pretty new HP Pavilions running the upgrade from 8 to 10) and found that doing a system restore fixed it straight away. It was followed by a number of upgrades and also some security issues (I have Norton and that dealt with them fast). Hope this might help others with the same irksome problem,

SO, this error (Critical error. Your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in.) JUST popped up on Monday, Sept 14th. I have tried to convert the MS account to a local but I get the errors.

How & why did this all of a sudden pop up?? Win 10 has been working great up until now.

Does anyone know if this happens to a local account is it just happening to MS accounts?? AND, why does it happen to 1 account & not the other?
This was my last Windows update: Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3081455)

I don't have Avast, but I have Norton. I do not want to reset Windows & reinstall all software. I had a MS tech remotely ran a DISM scan my computer & his only suggestion was the reset. He tried the powershell method that I saw online but that didn't work either.

Balisteve - When you reboot in safe mode, do you select safe mode with networking? I tried rebooting in safe mode with networking but nothing changed.

Setup Info: Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 Ghz 8 GB RAM
OS Windows 10 Home Release installed all via Windows Update Current Build is 10240
Upgraded From Windows 7 Home Premium

All updates have been installed according to Windows Update.

Have had zero issues until this popped up on Mon, Sept 14th.

  3. Yep, the universe works in mysterious ways - just when you need it too *Wink

There seems to be soemthng that does not get set correctly on some machines until you boot to Safe mode. That's it, just booting to Safe mode !

Running SFC isn't necessary, but it won't hurt.

re: Avast - during the late stages of the Win10 Technical Preview, Avast was causing some issues, as were other AV pkgs.
The solution was to upgrade the pkg to teh latest version - sometimes that means a clean install of the pkg (i.e. removing the pkg first). As long as you have the license key for purchased software, this should not be an issue.

Avast provides a tool to remove their software - it's often necessary to use this for a squeaky clean uninstall followed by a reinstall.
See: Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal

The issue on your machine seems to be cleared up, so there's no need to think about Avast ... other than making sure the engine and virus defs are up-to-date.

I was dumbfounded then found that AVAST was not up to date. Once I updated AVAST, windows 10 seems to be working correctly

Although some say that AVAST is not the problem, since I upgraded AVAST and restarted from OFF. it's working fine.

CRITICAL ERROR - Start Menu and CORTANA aren't working. W'll try to fi

I found that opening task manager and doing an end task on the Local Security Authority Process ( 5 ) would reboot the computer and clear the error.

Press Ctrl Alt Del buttons at the same time . The Task Manager window opens. Then locate the process I mentioned above. Right click it and choose end task. Wait while the computer reboots.

I had the same problem. "Start Menu and Cortana " wont start. After many hours with technician and call backs. They reinstalled windows 10. If you don't want to do that creating a new user account will cure the problem.

I found that RadDAd's method of opening task manager and doing an end task on the Local Authority Security Process actually worked.
I have had this fault on and off for three weeks but believed that recent updates had resolved the problem. Not So.

    Thank you!

  13. CRITICAL ERROR - Start Menu and CORTANA aren't working. W'll try to fi

I have tried these suggestions that I found via google. According to different forums these below methods are possible solutions - however they didnt work for me. Still cant right-click and cant log on to Startmenu, Store or apps or anything. Even in Safe-mode i cant right-click on taskbar to be able to pin or unpin. Anyone know what to do?

    Method 1 : Using Powershell

Step 1: Right click on Start Menu button and open Command Prompt as an administrator.

Step 2: Type in powershell and hit enter.

Step 3: Paste the following Command in the Powershell(previosuly was Command Prompt) window and hit enter.

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Step 4: Wait for the process to finish and complete the command

Step 5: When it finishes try clicking on Taskbar, Start Menu, Cortana, hopefully they will work by now. If not, use the next method.

Method 2 : Using tha batsolution

    Step 1 : Download this file » 10services_default.bat (62 KB)

Step 2 : Open the download file as an administrator.

Step 3 : Wait for 10 seconds, after 10 seconds it will start working

Step 4 : When the working process is finished, close every Window and Restart your PC

Step 5 : Now try clicking on Taskbar, Start Menu, Cortana. They will surely work as normal by now.

    Thanks

  14. Uninstalling avast worked for me. I had to do a right click on the desktop, moving the menu around the message so I could read it. I went into properties, opened the file location which brought me to windows explorer or whatever they're calling it now. Then I had to perform a search for control panel, cut I'm not techy enough to know where it is in there. Then I opened control panel and uninstalled AVAST, which performed a reboot after , and bam! Problem solved. Trying AVG now

  15. I have had this problem for the last three days. One thing is that it only shows up on my user account, but none of the other ones.
I use Norton 360 not Avast.

When I do the powershell rout I am told this:
