I thought I had got on top of this problem but no.. After uninstalling Dropbox all was ok for a week or so, so I reinstalled and all was good for about 4 weeks. Then got the error again. Uninstalled Dropbox again and all is well. I'll do without Dropbox for the time being.

As i read all the comments about avast causing this critical error thing, i dont think it really has something to do with that. I have been using avast premier on all version of windows & it's not causing any trouble for me..are you guys using a cracked avast? there's a real definition on this problem explained by microsoft. i read one of their forum & stated that it is caused by an update which is buggy & still they are finding an solution update on this.

  5. I was searching endlessly for a solution, reading though this thread got me to uninstall Dropbox. And it solved my problem. I didn't had Avast, so I was confused at first. Still, not sure how these programs are interfering with the start menu, it seems. I need Dropbox, so I'm gonna have to re-install it. Hopefully it's just an innocent bug.

    Thanks for the input guys!

Edit: Looks like there's something extremely buggy with my Dropbox on PC that just messes up the Start Menu along with the Microsoft app store. Had to uninstall once again, and everything is working like it should be.

I encountered the error on my laptop in August of 2015. It emerged right after I installed some updates. Then I used system restore and rolled back the system to the previous state. But today I encountered the same error on my desktop and again after the update! And to my surprise the system restore was off and I had no points to roll back to... I was about to reset Windows 10 but you know what... I launched ms-settings:windowsupdate manually searched for updates... it found updates and I installed them. And after the reboot I had all things working again!

CRITICAL ERROR - Start Menu and CORTANA aren't working. W'll try to fi

This issue started on my Win Ten upgrade desktop about 2 weeks ago. This was a desktop that had been running Win Ten with few problems since Aug 2015 and with automatic updates active. Tried all of the command line solutions, file scans, etc with no success. Reverted back to a restore point time, 2 weeks earlier, when everything was working and that solution lasted about 2 days. Then I noticed that I probably was not running the November 2015 new build, version 1511. Curious given active automatic updates. So I did the manual upgrade using the Media Creation Tool with the install option that preserved all of the currently installed apps. Did this after signing in the Administrator account and turning off Kaspersky protection. Don't know if the latter was important but the install seem to go smoother under those conditions than when signed in with my usual user account and Kaspersky Protection.

Everything seems to be faster now with fewer errors in the Windows log files and all of my apps are available and working. I might also add that I had earlier uninstalled the AMD catalyst software due to numerous cnext associated errors and have only kept the basic ATI video drivers. I don't do gaming so this is important for me.
