Discus and support Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3116908) in Windows 10 News to solve the problem; If only Linux had decent hardware support I would switch at once. I'm so tired of installing "updates" on my system that change who knows what.... Discussion in 'Windows 10 News' started by BrownianMotion, Dec 2, 2015.

Software is a problem too, no OS comes close to shear amount of SW, that may be even bigger plus for Windows. I use several Linux distros just because I can't use same SW on only one of them.
Another thing is that windows are more predictable than Linux. Even with all those changes there are no great surprises.

Linux is stable and getting more user friendly every year. But if you are used to Windows and have years of Windows software programs, switching over is a challenge, and odds are you'll end up going back to Windows. I put Linux Ubuntu which is one of the most user friendly distros on an old PC and it worked good, but there was a lot of setup work and you have to have good tech knowledge and understanding how Linux works.

If you want to try it run it on an older desktop to see how you like it. For beginners Ubuntu and Mint are very good.

Linux is great for servers. I run my business servers with CentOS Linux which is a low-cost clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. CentOS is extremely reliable. You virtually never even have to do a reboot, it just runs and runs smoothly.

  3. At least now we know what the update was for,
A few tweaks are always good
Wonder what patch Tuesday will bring cant wait to find out

  6. Why are you pushing Linux on a windows 10 forum.

  7. People come here and talk about Windows 8 and 7 too. Are you going to tell them were to go too? I didn't see anybody pushing Linux, it was casually mentioned, what's the big deal? Looks like some here have a hate on for Linux? I guess I better go delete my Raspberry Pi thread huh? *really

Completely with you - the OS is nothing more than an enabler; it's the software you install and run that is the point of having a PC. If every time Windows 10 crashes (freezes / BSODs / etc etc) and the answer is do a clean OS install plus reinstall of all apps, games etc (or even waste another 10 minutes while sfc /scannow thinks about things), it seriously diminishes the value of the PC.

After finally managing to get a clean bill of health from sfc a few days ago, I foolishly installed a PCIe WiFi card which appears to work OK, but I'm now getting intermittent Win10 crashes/freezes again. And once again sfc is claiming that files are corrupted than can't be fixed. DISM says it hasn't got the necessary source files to fix it etc etc. Am I left with yet another clean install? I despair!

  11. Your post just sounded a little gruff to me and pushed my buttons a bit. I can do quit a bit on my Pi that I can't do on my Windows PC. It's far from being "some system that you cant do nothing with". It will also run Windows 10 IoT, but when running that OS it actually is "some system that you cant do nothing with". Verry very limited compared to what I can do on it when running Linux. Anyway, I'll say no more on that subject and let things go back on track.

  12. So far I am quite happy with windows 10 pro on my hp nc6400 laptop. it runs much faster and smoother than windows 7 pro did. I also have a mac mini desktop at home and windows 10 works almost as good as el capatain does for me on my mini. I have tried several different versions of Linux and really have a real dislike for it.

Have you saved an ISO somewhere ?
    If yes, please mount it.
Then go to elevated command prompt and copy/paste this...............
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:H:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Note: H is the letter where the iso is mounted. If yours is not H, change it.

If you get your iso from MCT, you will get Install.esd instead of Install.wim.
In that case, Dism will return with the same message..... source file not found.

Solution, download the iso file from Tech Bench which will give you the Install.wim shown from the Sources folder.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give this a go this evening... Anything to avoid another clean OS Install!

Out of interest, I have an original retail MS Windows 10 Home install USB stick, and another USB stick I created myself from MCT for the 1511 update. I get it that the 1511 USB I created with MCT won't work with DISM, but will the MS original Win10 Home install USB work? Or is it best to download and virtual-mount the latest ISO from Tech Bench in order to get the most up-to-date file versions? I'm assuming the latter...

I assume that the original MS USB is the older version 10240. That won't do you any good.
