I'm on the slow ring and it is not available as of tonight 9/28. 14393 is the commercial Anniversary build (1607), so it's difficult to understand why Microsoft would call this an "Insider" build--it was released to the general public and to all non-Insiders. If Microsoft is using the Preview Test Ring to beta test its cumulative updates for its non-Insider, standard release builds (like 14393.187 which I am running at present), I think I will stay far away from those...! It's often the cumulative updates which cause Microsoft the most trouble when it updates the non-Insider standard builds when they are released in final form to the general public, so if anything I would think these beta cumulative updates on the Preview ring for the 14393.xxx standard build might possibly be even more of a hassle...*Wink I think I'll wait until they are officially released.

Edit: OK: it's 9/29 in the p.m. and I am getting the cumulative update on the slow ring--the description says "release for 1607" with no mention of "Insider" release...so I imagine this has been fairly bug-checked already...*Wink Fingers crossed...

Edit: Speak of the devil--it's no go--it failed @ 99% complete..! Then rebooted back to 14393.187...! I should have saved myself the trouble...:/

Since there have been many problems in the series of Insider updates between 14905 - 14931 that makes Insiders revert to either a working, non-expiring feature update such as 14393 and halt their Insider updates temporarily, or rollback to one of the less problematic, but expiring-soon insider versions, It is possible that this cumulative update is part of a 'census-by-telemetry' process to discover the extent of Release Preview and Slow ring insiders (and by non-inclusion, the remainder of Fast Ring Insiders that have reverted to 14393 until a more stable Insider release is available) within the Insider population as a whole.

I found the problem to be exacerbated by the release of a lot of new builds in a short period of time, that gave me no time to evaluate the builds, and I just felt overwhelmed - so I took a timeout from the fast ring.

I felt that the relatively short lifetime of some of the '1607' family of insider releases before they expired at the beginning of October was a mistake - the expiry date should have been after the next long-term feature update, to enable Insiders to run these as long as they feel necessary or possible to enable the variants, without Insiders running them being pressurised to update to a subsequent short term expiry build, without any certainty of a long term feature release before the timeout occurs.

So, I'd suggest a 6-month lifetime for Insider builds is a reasonable time, but 3 months is not, and that weekly intervals should be the minimum for the release of fast ring builds, with two weeks being a maximum.

  3. Builds 14931 and 14936 don't expire until May, 2017. MS has deduced the issues arising from short-term expiration periods and reverted to long-term periods.

Sadly 14931 had usability problems too, so folk were stuck with the problem of either:

    • lose your installed apps and files by reverting to 14393, or
    • lose function and expect shutdowns if you stick with your rollback insider version, in a matter of days.

    Hopefully 14936 will be better.

Hopefully 14936 will be rolled out in time.

There's no mileage in alienating or upsetting your workforce, even if they are unpaid volunteer beta testers. I hope Microsoft has learnt this lesson.

    Hi All,
I'm getting this update right now. Download is at 90%.... not sure how long it's been going.
A search on Google says this is for Insiders but I am not an Insider.
    Anyone else getting it?
