Windows 10: Cumulative Update KB4015438 for Windows 10 v1607 Build 14393.969

My biggest issue with Windows Updates is that, for the gigantic size of the download and sometimes slow restarts, I would expect more Win10 feature changes, not just deep, behind the scenes minor fixes and security updates. It seems these can be done with packages 1/10th the size.

 

I performed this update on Erin's lappy and it went in fast and without a hitch.

They can I guess, and that seemed to be the strategy with W7. Then when you did a fresh install off your old OEM disk, you were dealing with 200+ individual updates, but at least this was satisfying to watch. Now with W10 the strategy seems to be to lump them all in one CU, hence the name. Which isn't very transparent, takes up more resources and apparently carries a greater risk for things to go amiss.

We haven't been updating our Windows 7 recently, have we?

W7 and W8 are now on the same update strategy as W10 - monthly rollups. Same as with W10, you will only download the parts of the update package that have changed since you last updated.

Further simplifying servicing models for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

 

Lol.. No, we haven't. I've been on W10 for a year now and my step-son's the only one still running W7 in our household (he's a heavy Steam-er and doesn't like W10). And I'm not monitoring his pc anymore.

 

I downloaded the update today(both on laptop and desktop) but I always install on my laptop first to make sure everything is working fine..its just been spinning on "Getting Windows Ready dont turn off your computer" doesnt move up or anything not sure what is going on

That seems par for the course, mine sat for 25 minutes before the 'percent done' started its count from 0% up to 30% before the reboot. It was busy doing something, judging by the disk activity lights.

 

Mine took over 20 minutes from that screen. I hate it when MS releases these useless updates for minor fixes that are freaking huge and your computer is a hostage. You can't use it until the update installs or often fails.

The darn Update should only fix 2 problems but my FF is almost dead, my PC is crawling and the darn thing took almost 45 mins to install :!!!!

 

Tried uninstalling, clearing out caches/temp files and re-installing a fresh new copy of FireFox?

Well after two days of trying to install this using windows update and getting the .msu from thr catalogue i give up, in my update History i umpteen failed to install. what the hell is going on at Microsoft .....? Windows update used to be a breeze to install.*Mad

 

As a postsfript to my other post, now i have the windows update screen in settings stuck on downloading updates 0% I went to delete the files in C:\windows\softwaredisribution\download and get the message that it cannot delete them as they are being used by another application, i thought if i could delete them and restart that would fix the windows update .

 

And no fix for System Restore not working. *Mad

 

Don't quote me on this but I think you have to stop the Windows Update service in services.msc....then you should be able to delete those files........I THINK that's what I did......
