It wasn't (officially) but a direct link to Microsoft's 16299.15 version of the MCT got leaked a week before launch and some of us got an early opportunity to try it out.

Just finished up updating to Ver. 1709 OS Build 16299.19 took 3 hours, but It appears to be running ok .
Took a look at View Installed Update History and there is no updates listed there ???? Is that correct ?

Just checked for any updates and found 2, KB4041979 an Adobe Security update, and KB4041994 a Win 10 update. After installing these they show in my Update History (but are the only 2). So I guessing I'm ok.

I have also KB4043961 listed as the 3rd installed update.
KB4043961 is the one that updates 16299.15 to 16299.19.

Imagine my surprise when this morning i am informed that a new update is available and it is 1709...I am using 1703...674 so i let the update do its thing. 10 hrs later it decides to leave me on 1703 after getting to 100% and installing at 100% reboots and i'm back where i started on 1703...Geez these updates are getting to be a PITA to install....Now its downloading the update again. How do i cancel the download so i can get it from the catalogue.

Just hit the red X at top right and get out of Windows Update page.

Click the Media Creation Tool link below :
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/soft...load/windows10

    Click the Update Now button.
That will enable Update Assistant to check if your device is ready for update.
If approved, it will start download and Install.
    Just follow the prompts.

I posted a similar topic in this thread.......
I got 16299.19 directly by updating via MCT

Had the same issue with WSUS and KB4043961. I have resorted to manually installing the patch for the time being, not ideal, but hoping the next CU does not have this issue.

Does hitting the red X at the top of Windows Update stop the download though. I'd imagine it's still going on behind the scenes. I just wonder if he may have problems using alternate methods to upgrade if Windows Update is still doing it's thing?

has 1709 replaced 1703 as i cannot see it in the sticky anymore. I have downloaded 1709 from the catalogue but will wait before installing it to see if its replacing 1703.

    Apparently it does.
I did the same thing on my Surface Pro1.
On my reply to Jeepers (post #36), I included a link to another thread of mine describing what I did.

  11. Ok thanks, that is good to know as I will have always been pensive to try and do anything else whilst I thought there was an active background download/update activity

Since this update, IE11 auto-launches on startup. It's not listed in my Startup, and no Scheduled Task to run it. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix?

Have you done a Restart since that happened ?
If not, do a restart and see if issue persists.

It will - take it from me! This appears to be by design. Since Insider build 16251 all apps registered as capable of being restarted will do so on Restart or Shut down. There's already a long thread on this....

on a restart Fall Creators Update reopens apps from before

IE is one such app, Task Manager and the Snipping Tool are two other examples (there are more - read the above thread, particularly post #53 on, where what's happening starts to become clearer and post #77 for what I think is the explanation of how this restart works. There are also workarounds in that thread, using shortcuts to call shutdown.exe.

    Yeah

Simply create two desktop icons for 1) shutdown, and 2) restart

    1) shutdown.exe /s /hybrid /t 0

/hybrid is optional but allows faststart if you use it.

    2) shutdown.exe /r /t 0

    These stop the annoying behaviour.
