    Hi,

AMD invented the first 64 bit CPu so MS has to use AMD64 for legal purposes.

    Cheers, *Wink

  3. "AMD64" refers to the 64-bit evolution of the x86 architecture which is now standard in the market. Basically, Intel promoted the incompatible IA-64 (aka Itanium) in partnership with HP, but for various reasons it didn't work out in the marketplace. (Originally it was designed as a server architecture and there was very little software written for it.)

AMD developed its own evolutionary and backwards-compatible 64-bit architecture, working closely with Microsoft. It was known as AMD64. Eventually Intel realized it had lost and caved in, producing its EM64T implementation of the same thing.

Intel and AMD later entered into a cross-licensing agreement (in part due to Intel's shady rebate deals effectively excluding AMD from the marketplace), and so there is a lot of commonality, although still fierce competition about the creation and adoption of extensions, and their adoption within the market (which Intel has mostly won, consider SSE/AVX vs. 3DNow!).

Taking a step back, this indicates is that there are also versions of this update package for other architectures, which has always been the case (including the original x86, Itanium, Power, and ARM chips used mostly in tablets).

Disaster struck, after this painfully slow update and a restart all looked ok. Until the download of the Fall Creators Edition suddenly started. WHICH I BLOCKED in settings, I am at the business branch!!!! Triple checked it after the download started, couldn’t believe my eyes. I have no idea what to do now, I am more or less in panic because I was working on a project that has to be finished. I HATE this shabby update mechanism of Win 10, I just hate it.

*UPDATE * just lost another system to the very same effect. I am extremely angry right now. Also n both affected system some msterious update KB 4049011 is installed. It’s totally out of control here. Just lost both of my production system on business branch.

It means that this update actually broke the update settings. That would be a blunder.

This happened straight after installing KB4048955 despite the obvious choice for business. Do I miss something here, am I a total idiot?

Completed the update on 4 machines and all seemed to go OK. I did notice the Software Removal Tool stated for "...Windows Insider Preview and Server Technical Preview November 2017". These versions are regular retail. Strange.

  9. Just finished installing all four updates among which KB4048955. All done in 14 minutes. I really hope not to find any issues in the next 2-3 days coming while I am using my 2PCs.

Unfortunately, it looks like there is a huge bug in this KB. On business machines it indeed installs 1709 without checking the chosen business branch. That’s not good news at all and the first complaints are slowly appearing *Sad It happens directly after the install of the latest KB and a check for new updates. Which happens after a restart or new boot for example. No way of stopping it anymore. I have an idea though, will let you know if it works. For now: Houston, we have a problem.

Then you got a different update because this thread is for the update that is installed to systems that already have the Creators Update installed. Check your KB number and it will not be 4048955.

  15. Maybe its because I have the FALL CREATORS UPDATE already installed, but this is the first "Patch Tuesday" fix/update in YEARS that didn't require a restart. (Though I restarted anyway, just to be sure.)

You'd almost think that nothing happened because of this update, because the computer restarted quickly and didn't freeze for 30 seconds after the restart. No "installing updates...please wait" during the restart process either. Very strange, but I'm not complaining.
