Short version:-

FCU allows disk management to create multiple partitions on normal flash drives now.

Ability to create and access mulitiple partitions on normal flash drives was introduced in CU version but had to use diskpart or 3rd party tools.

Windows To Go still requires certified drives.

You can use wintousb or rufus to create bootable flash drives. Wintousb can do uefi ones now, not sure about Rufus. Note: they call them Windows to go, but that is rather naughty as Windows To Go is an MS trademark, and requires certificated drives.

Edit: I cannot see option on Rufus - it looks like it has been removed (probably due to above)?

You don't have to buy a certified drive for it. I've been using a Muskin Ventura Ultra USB3 drive for ages without any problem at all. I think it's one of the fastest around but it does get hot at times.
Rufus can do UEFI as well. It uses a tiny partitition with NTFS EFI drivers for it.
You need to select your source ISO file first, then the menu will appear where you can either select standard Windows installation or Windows to Go.

There is a difference between a bootable version of windows on a flash drive and a Windows To Go installation. WTG has extra features to protect user if you accidentally remove drive for example.A bootable version by Wintousb does not have - remove drive and it will crash.

 

Installed on one laptop and couldn’t start some of programs, couldn’t get I.e. to respond. On other computer, desktop, no programs would respond. Start button non responsive. I had just finished a backup, so I hope macrium will restore it.

 

Well KB4048955 finally made here on the day after Thanksgiving. Odd thing happened during the the restart though. I let the system restart, left and got another cup of java, came back and the Monitor was OFF (No connection) and the disk light would flash every now and then. I watched it for another few minutes and decided to Power the system off (via the power on key). While holding the pwr button, up flashes my logon screen. I sign in and I have 2 notifications. First was the dumb "Making it better" message followed by Defender scan summary ! But it seems to be running now. The only thing that is still broke since FCU install is my NAS storage is not seen by file explorer. The router utility sees it, Synctoy sees it, but not file explorer.

Does anybody have any ideas. By the way its Netgear "Readyshare" ?

 

Actually, FCU still cannot manage partitions on some types of USB until another application (3rd party or MS-supplied) has created an MBR on the USB. You see, a USB doesn't need an MBR to be able to contain a file system, but Disk Management (CU or FCU) requires there to be an MBR before it can manage partitions on the USB.

I think the reason you're finding that FCU can now manage partitions is that you're using a newer USB. I've noticed that all my recent purchases come pre-formatted with an MBR, whereas some of my older USBs didn't use one.

Once you have created an MBR on a USB (with Diskpart, or using the MCT to make bootable install media) it seems impossible to revert to the 'out of the box' format without an MBR, hence all used USBs are liable to be manageable in Disk Management.

For testing purposes, I have a 3rd-party 'USB image' app that let's me restore an image of the USB that I took before using it. Notice the subtle difference (info courtesy of MiniTool Partition Wizard) between these two apparently identical Lexar 8GB USBs (both were from the same multipack). The first is as it was originally formatted by Lexar, the second is after using the MCT (so it now has an MBR). In particular, look at the partition type and first physical sector.







While the FCU's Disk Management can manage partitions on the second Lexar, it cannot on the first one. Attempting to delete the volume it contains still gets...





In FCU it still requires the use of Diskpart to clean this particular USB before 1709's Disk Management can be used.

Documentation for Windows 10 and Windows 8 "To Go" indicate that if a running USB is removed, the computer will freeze, and there is a 60 second window to reinsert the USB in the same USB port to preserve and return to the workspace session. If not returned to the same port, the Computer will close down after the 60 second grace time. There is a warning:

Warning
You should never remove your Windows To Go drive when your workspace is running. The computer freeze is a safety measure to help mitigate the risk of accidental removal. Removing the Windows To Go drive without shutting down the Windows To Go workspace could result in corruption of the Windows To Go drive.

Thanks @Fafhrd. When the WTG stick gets pulled the host machine is flagged and WTG will try to reset itself. Which it can't.
After a few restarts it often stops doing that and boots normally though. Most of the time that is.
