Yep, on the 1st install try mine did show the 35% then jump to lock screen and on the subsequent retries it didn't show any percentage.

I went ahead and hid the update (keep windows from chasing it's tail) and cleaned up everything again. Now, this is where things get really strange ... I Downloaded the update from MS catalog and saved it to disk. The 1st time I ran the .msu it didn't actually do anything (ie. as go thru the install process). The 2nd time I ran it Windows Smart Screen blocked it and after I told it to allow, the .msu said data was invalid. Ok, corrupt download, so i deleted it. Downloaded it again from MS catalog and this time instead of saving it, I let it open with the Standalone Updater. It actually went thru the entire install process this time and told me to restart. Upon restart, it jumped to 100% and then to lock screen. It stilled failed install tho, with the same error code.

Edit: At least I got an error in the cbs.log this time, that either wasn't there or I missed the first 5 times. All the other setuperr.log files are empty.

  3. Like a knife in butter

There were no side effects in the previous one.

The Standalone Installer process, including restart took 10 minutes. At 30%, machine reboots back to 30% and ends rapidly after.

Run manually KB890830.exe on *214 before. Full scan was 45 minutes.

    All the best,

    Cumulative Update KB4074588 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.248 - Feb. 13

Both my machines got updated successfully after I went begging for KB4074588

My Install and Restart times were a bit longer I noticed, with this KB's Install % actually dropping back to 10% from 24% at one point before continuing normally. That was a first.

Total round trip desktop to desktop, 1+ hour, a time quite merciful I find, once it's successful.

I experienced no issues with sfc /scannow, or the network being unable to see each machine.

One thing unusual however on the laptop, and something I'd never seen before appeared after the restart and just after logging in and just as the desktop opened - a small white box with a yellow header in the upper left corner that said:

Lasted for about 10 seconds but hasn't returned since.

First time I ever received a notification from action center stating that an update was available and awaiting restart. I installed the update and all went smooth. I did an sfc scan and it found no integrity violations.

    Manual update again, yay!

Would think Norton would've verified with Microsoft that all their products have the registry key set, not just Norton Security, but somehow that has apparently slipped their minds. Messaged them, needed to state the issue three times, so now I've got someone "getting back to me". Freaking hell. Just get 360 verified and let me have my automatic downloads back.

Everything went smoothly here, but after cleanup I still have those pesky 46 MB that can not be removed from "Windows Update Cleanup" since the last CU.

*Ditto I tried to run disk cleanup with elevated privilege hoping that it would have gotten rid of those 46 MB, but no joy *Banghead

So after three representatives and several hours of trying and failing to figure out why Windows Update is being such a pill about this (including uninstalling the update, disabling Norton, and uninstalling Norton), I'm ready to chalk it up to Win10 weirdness, be thankful that manual updates work, reinstall the update manually, and call it a night. Sigh.

Installed here without issues but MS should fix Disk cleanup being slower than hell cleaning up Windows Updates. It takes 15m on SSD. I remember w7 disk cleanup was pretty fast.

Disk cleaner still broken, took 30 minutes to clear 2.5GB and still shows 46MB plus defender at 4.9MB. You would have thought MS would have fixed it by now.

Have left comments on the feedback hub - one can only hope.
