Thank-you. I will turn it on and see if it makes a difference. My wife has an HP on this network. Hers is toggled to "download updates from PCs on the network". She gets the monthly updates with no problems...even the Adobe Flash security updates.

Will run the Windows Update Troubleshooter I see posted earlier in this thread, too. Thanks again for the informed feedback.

  2. I updated using the 64bit stand-alone installer listed at the top of this thread. I too received the "restart to finish" button.

After restarting, my desktop icons were all squeezed to the left of the monitor. I dragged them all back to where they normally are, and restarted again. After 15 minutes...still no desktop. I held down the power button until the computer shut off. Waited 30 seconds and pressed power to fire up the PC again. Took about 5 minutes, but it finally came back.

Until this week, I've never experienced any problems from Windows-10 updates.. since upgrading from Win-7 in Sept 2015.

Once upon a time Microsoft had qualified software engineers that could make updates work smoothly and without hours of troubleshooting, fixes that do not work, and more hours of downloading windows, resetting and just everything under the Sun that only works some of the time. IMHO, much of the hacking on MS OS PC’s is from insider information Iwill just protect my PC’s with other than Microsoft updates and just ignore them because my time is worth more than trying to cope with their incompetent software people.

Wow, miracles will never cease;the update finally worked on number 7 attempt. All I did was re-boot. Well, maybe not since I forget exactly what I did to get there after using several so-called fixes on this and other forums. I think starting the Update Troubleshooter for the 4th time and it apparently found a fix that worked, maybe. Why would two identical PCs work differently where one updated and the other did not? I only turn these desktops on once every couple of weeks and usually one or the other will have problems with an update. WHY?

I think it should be Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - March 2018 (KB890830) not servicing stack update.

For those who installed the patch and it appears that error means that they are updated and there is nothing else to do.

In my case, that message appears but in the history of installed updates. There is no button to restart the update :/
Usually when there is an error it stops and re-downloads and installs it. And it is there in the history that shows the two: the error and the correct installed.

I used the Update Troubleshooter and nothing.

I have a doubt. When the next Creators Update comes out it will be like a new installation of the operating system. For those who have problems with the installations of the patches due to the lack of one as pre requisite or another reason. With the new CU, everything will be in one package ?

my system has updated to 16299.309 but i keep getting a failed Windows Defender update error

"Definition Update for Windows Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Definition 1.263.659.0) - Error 0x80070643"

i tried many fixes including reinstalling windows 10 (keeping programs, files & settings) but no change..
if i try to update directly from defender i get "error code - 2147023293 ...Fatal error during installation"

Disk Cleanup of system files is also problematic & doesn't complete on its own.. has to be stopped & restarted numerous times but ultimately seems to delete the required files..

since i reinstalled windows 10.. do you think it's a setting that was retained from previous install that is stopping it from working? i've wasted hours on this and i've hit the wall.

  9. Are you using a third-party A-V software besides Windows Defender?. If so, try to uninstall it and run adwCleaner (it's free & safe from MBAM) to eliminate the possibility of malware infection. After that, I would suggest resetting Windows Update. Check the following links:

Try updating definitions from the Windows Defender Security Centre instead.

Back in April last year this error code was due to a problem at Microsoft's end for one particular definitions update.
On Windows Defender Definition Update error 0x80070643

Disk Clean-up is known to take a very long time on 'cleaning updates' under some circumstances. If you have the patience just leave it running, it will complete eventually (hours later, occasionally).

There's no predictable pattern to this, but it seems to only happen after certain cumulative updates - and even then not for everyone. You know you're in for the long haul when Disk Clean-up says there are 3.99TB that can be cleaned.

    no 3rd part A-V installed..
i ran adwCleaner.. it found and removed 1 PUP
i did the windows reset batch file from Brink earlier and neither have made any difference.
i have also tried the following:
tried Elevated Command prompt with below commands:
“%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe” -RemoveDefinitions -All (this worked ok)
“%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe” -SignatureUpdate (this failed - ERROR: Signature Update failed with hr=80070643) is this a clue ?
i tried manual update via "mpam-fe.exe" but error remains
i tried windows update trouble shooter.. it finds issues.. repairs them but Defender won't install the definition
tried DISM restore health and SFC/scannow but no issues found
    reset firewall.. no change

Where SFC and DISM fail to repair an issue, an in-place repair install can often solve it (it can keep all your installed apps, files and most settings).

    Bree,

regarding the Repair Install, i did that also.. twice (not be be confused with the reset which wipes just about everything)

what about this part i mentioned earlier..
    “%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe” -SignatureUpdate
this command failed - i got following error: "Signature Update failed with hr=80070643"
    is this a clue ?

i appreciate your suggestions as i'm out of ideas..

Not an error I've encountered, but apparently others have. This example was from 2010, so not directly applicable in W10. It says .NET Framework can be a cause.
