Have you tried MS Catalog? See post # 1 for the link. Pretty rare that HP resist to the MS Catalog. There is also the Win 10 troubleshooter: Settings>Update & Security>Troubleshoot>Windows Update> Run the troubleshooter. You may also try to delete the content of Software Distribution: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Run Disk Cleanup is another option.

Edit: SoftwareDistribution properties shows 14.5MB for size on disk after running Disk Cleanup. What are you reading there?

I have had no issues with this new build. Windows seems to be about the same, one can but hope. *Smile

@Bree Sad individual that I am, I woke up thinking about this issue today (I know - i should get out more *Sad)

Referring to posts 68 to 70 above, might I also respectfully refer you to this oldish thread Allow Automatic Updates over Metered Connections in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials .
As we know, Windows Pro and Home differ in this regard but even on Pro, I've found that doing what you suggest in #70 (using the Download button, with networking metered) doesn't always download it all especially with big updates.

I'm not trying to score points here @Bree (I wouldn't presume to do so *Biggrin ) but these are my experiences.

Thanks all, I stopped Windows update service now untill to solve it or to wait on new update on next Tuesday.
IronZorg89: thanks, I will try all steps you write and I hope that can help too.
MikeMecanic: I tried MS Catalog - it does not help, I tried also to uninstall antivirus (Eset) and stop firewall - nothing helps.

Which version were your experiences with @VBF? It makes a big difference.

As I said on that thread you linked to, metered connections worked as intended in 1507 and 1511, were broken with the release of 1607, still broken in 1703 but fixed in 1709.

Set Wireless Network as Metered or Non-Metered in Windows 10 (post #51)

In 1607 and then in 1703, with metered connections turned on cumulative updates ignore the 'metered' state and try to download anyway, hanging at 2% until you turn off metering. You never got shown the 'Download' button as you should (but you did get asked when the only update was a Defender definitions update).

Fall Creators Update 1709 seems to have resolved both those issues. Checking for updates over metered connections now appears to work as intended...

Ah....I'm completely forgetting about anything earlier than 1709 as, to me, it's irrelevant*Cool in all honesty I cannot remember what the buttons did before 1709 but I realise it's relevant to this discussion.

So MY comments in 68-70 refer to 1709 and, I think, in that context they're still valid - would you agree @Bree ?

It works both ways in 1709. Your method requires no further intervention though (like clicking the 'download' button) and is probably quicker, the download button can take a while to appear.

I'm interested in seeing what gets downloaded over a metered connection that MS deem as '...required for the smooth running of windows' so I keep metered connection on. So far the only updates to bypass 'metering' seem to be Flash updates and Antimalware Platform updates. Cumulative updates will wait for approval.

Is this only for Intel? I'm on AMD on this machine and my FCU Lappy.

    Lenovo is Intel, though.

  12. Thanks for the heads-up. I was so glad that I finally got this MC update after waiting for so long that I didn't take time to check tenforum's index tutorial. I just wanted to share my findings. *Wink

Just to confirm what it says in the linked thread

    KB4090007 Intel microcode Cumulative Update for Windows 10 v1709 - Page 17 - Windows 10 Forums

"it's an optional update. Upgrading Windows gives you a new 'Software Distribution' folder. You will ALWAYS have to reapply the patch every time there is a feature update. That's why the BIOS method is preferable, it works regardless of OS."

Do we all agree with that?

Exactly as it says: "That's why the BIOS method is preferable, it works regardless of OS.".
The MS microcode will load upon startup and will be cleared on shutdown. And of course the microcode patch needs to be reapplied on every feature update.
To make a long story short, please check your Manufacturer's site for a BIOS update, to get rid of this thing *Smile
