I'll try doing the "clean boot" tomorrow (I've been up for 19 hours, & need some sleep!). It scares me, though - there are a LOT of steps to it, so I've printed off the instructions from the Windows support page & your directions in step 12.

Clean boot is relatively easy. It's similar to having a room with 50 electronic devices with a wall switch. Each time you boot the computer the switch is activating all 50 electronic devices. When you change to clean boot it may switch on 20 of the devices. The other 30 you need to walk over to the electrical appliance to turn it on. Like clean boot the individual item is off until you turn it on.

Please post the images of startup and recovery settings and virtual memory settings.
The settings may need to be modified. After the modification open whocrashed.
Then perform a whocrashed crash dump test.
    Then analyze.
If it analyzes the dump post a zip into the thead.

The HD Tune error scan for 1 drive looks good. When available you can post the 3 scan results for each drive.
Some Samsung drives may need to be tested with Samsung magician.

By the way - I went back into my Device Manager, to remove the PS/2 mouse & keyboard, and they're not there at all anymore. Weird. Of course, I had a black screen & non-responsive computer this morning when I returned to it.

I looked at the event viewer, and found a lot of errors from earlier this morning, most related to DistributedCOM. Whatever that means...

Apparently, that doesn't work on this computer. As previously, I just get a flash of a black pane with red text for an instant, and it's gone too fast to even see what was there. Is there another way to view this?

There were crashes but no BSOD yet as the crash dump failed.

    1) When available please post images of the test results for HD Tune:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark

    2) Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
This may take hours so plan to run it overnight.
Please make sure you use the Memtest86+ version 5.01 with the link below.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
The testing is done not by time but by passes.
    The more passes the better.
There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
There is 6 GB of RAM on the computer.
    Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes.
When Memtest86+ has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

I'll try running the memtest86 now. I don't know if it will be able to complete, as there's a Windows security update trying to install again, every hour or so. As soon as it detects inactivity it tries to install, then crashes to black screen on reboot #2.

    We'll see what happens...

By the way - there appear to be 50 or so versions of memtest86 - should I use
    http://www.memtest.org/download/5.01...6+-5.01.iso.gz or
    http://www.memtest.org/download/5.01...+-5.01.iso.zip
    or a different version?

**Edit - I just tried both of the above, and neither worked. I must be missing something.

Any version for Memtest86+ version 5.01 that works on the computer should be ok as long as there are 8 or more passes.
Please use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

For the drive please use Samsung magician after the memtest86+ version 5.01 has completed.

Windows updates should not be able to interfere with Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing.

Okay. I went away from the computer for an hour or so, and it crashed again while I was away from it. Usual black screen, no messages, hard drive non-responsive, and on manual restart, got a message that it was trying to complete the installation, followed by "restoring your previous version of Windows".

I'm trying an experiment at the moment. I noticed a ton of error messages when I ran event viewer again, and checked Google for others having the same error. One person, in particular, was having precisely the same issues I am, and he actually said that he found a solution. He unplugged his Passport accessory drives (the same as I have), downloaded the update, and it went in fine & started working again for the first time in months. So, I'm giving that a go, to see what happens. It would be nice if it was something that simple (but, with my luck, it NEVER is!)

Well, the experiment seems to have worked, at least with the KB5057142 update is concerned. It downloaded normally, and the computer rebooted properly into normal Windows, without the black screen. Of course, that doesn't mean everything's good - still lots of errors in the event viewer log, "ATI EEU PnP start/stop failed 16396", DistributedCOM, and Bonjour Service being the most common.

I've tried every single version of Memtest86 5.01, and can't find one that will work. One of them turns out to be a VLC video file (VLC says it's a video, but not a recognized codec), the USB version doesn't recognize any of my USB drives, I don't have a floppy drive, and the bootable ISO versions just give me a system error message that "Virtual hard disc files can't be mounted from image files, or from removable media that isn't formatted with the NTFS file system", and won't go any further.

I did manage to fool it into loading onto a USB, but all that's there is a brief text file, explaining Memtest86's purpose & where to find on the net. There were no actionable files.

I don't have USB 3, just USB 2 I believe (the PC is 7 years old). The device manager only refers to USB, not USB 2 or 3.

I did try all the USB connections I have, and several 30 Gb USB's, but the results were the same. Strangely, when I downloaded & installed memtest86 v. 5.1 on the USB flash drive, it said it would format the USB, but that didn't happen. There were a couple of small photos on it & a small document, but those remained.

Presumably, I'll need to create a bootable USB with a Windows OS before I can do any of this. I have no idea how to do it, but I'll do some research.

I Googled UEFI to find out what it was. My computer uses Legacy BIOS, not UEFI, so no fast boot options as far as I can tell. Is it still possible to boot from a USB without UEFI?

Sorry this is so difficult & involved, just to run a single test. I suppose that's a downside to having an older computer.

On the plus side, the computer sat idle and unattended for 5 hours, and it kept running normally, without crashing. That hasn't happened in quite a while!
