Windows 10: Dark mode, drag and drop and more features for Microsoft To-Do on iOS

From drag and drop to dark mode—we added some excellent new features specific to iOS or iPadOS 13 this week. Without further ado let’s take a closer look.

Welcome to the dark side

If you’re already using iOS 13 in dark mode, then you’ll have noticed this change the minute you updated To Do. We now take your light or dark mode system settings and adjust the app accordingly. Love it bright and light during the day but want to give your eyes a rest at night? Set your system settings to automatic, then To Do will flip to dark mode automatically at sunset.

Drag and drop on iPad

It’s now easier to share links to To Do on iPad. Want to add a link from Twitter to read later? Or a location for that important task you have to check off? All of this is possible by dragging the link from one app into To Do while in Split View. Touch and hold the link and then drag it across to a particular task in To Do or to the New Task option to create a new task from the link.

Dragged your links across? Great! Now click into the detail view and you’ll notice that we now show you a preview card of the link. If it’s a video, you can watch it directly in To Do. Looking for something to do this weekend? Create a Movie night list of all the awesome films coming up, add trailers and share it with friends so they can join in the fun.

More drag and drop

While we’re here, we wanted to mention another cool feature we brought out on iPhone and iPad recently. You can now drag steps into your list to turn them into tasks, and vice versa. You can also pick up multiple tasks and drag them into a different list or create a new list with them.

Dark theme is coming to Gmail for Android and iOS Mobile

Quick launch summary

Earlier this year, we launched the new Gmail on mobile to help you get things done quickly, such as viewing attachments or searching for a specific email.

We’re further enhancing the Gmail experience on Android and iOS devices by introducing dark theme support. Dark theme will begin rolling out today—for details on how to configure dark mode once it’s rolled out to your device, see below.

How to enable dark theme in Gmail on Android:

To enable dark theme on Android 10:

In your Android Display system setting, set your device to dark theme—Gmail will automatically respect the system default setting.

On Pixel, when Battery Saver is enabled, Gmail will default to dark theme automatically.

Or, in Gmail go to Settings > Theme and select “Dark".

How to enable dark theme in Gmail on iOS:

For iOS 11 or 12, enable dark theme by going to Settings > Dark Theme.

To enable dark theme on iOS 13, you can:

Set your device to dark theme in iOS Settings, and Gmail, by default, will automatically respect the system default setting.

Or, in Gmail go to Settings > Theme and select “Dark”.

Outlook mobile for iOS and Android is rolling out Dark Mode Mobile

Today we are starting to roll out dark mode in Outlook for iOS and Android. For added comfort or when a bright screen may not be appropriate, we’re bringing people the choice and flexibility to adapt their experience with a simple and powerful Microsoft 365 Dark Theme experience.

Outlook for Android and iOS

Adapting to work life flow, Outlook focuses its design on the context of where people want to use Dark Mode. When asked, people found the experience comfortable and aesthetically pleasing while keeping their email and calendar content crisp and clear. This way, Outlook helps you stay connected and organized so you can get things done wherever you are such as dimly lit living rooms, home offices or airplanes.

This experience is in keeping with other modern apps that aim to ease viewing and reduce eye strain. And, to help optimize battery life, once iOS and Android devices support dark themes*, Outlook plans to automatically switch to Dark Mode based on their device settings in addition to Outlook in-app options.

It’ll take several weeks to complete the full roll out of Dark Mode in Outlook for iOS or Android worldwide. Dark Mode in Microsoft 365 is here

People often think of Dark Mode as a choice between a black or white screen, but this feature involves a wide spectrum of both grayscale and color gradients.It’s an apt metaphor for why we love Dark Mode: human needs unfold across an equally broad spectrum. Whether you want to reduce eye strain, improve battery life, or it just has aesthetic appeal, Dark Mode exemplifies our ability to craft simple and powerful Microsoft 365 experiences that give you choice and flexibility.

Customer choice was why we first brought a darker UI theme to desktop apps in Office 2010, and we’ve brought it to more Microsoft experiences ever since due to its popularity.

A cross-company design collaboration propels us to seamlessly bring Dark Mode to the broader M365 product suite, and today marks the initial rollout of Dark Mode on Outlook for iOS and Android, as well as Office.com! The upcoming launch of iOS 13 will then extend this rollout to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, and To-Do on mobile.

Designing Dark Mode for Outlook mobile and Office.com

Today’s fast and fluid world constantly blurs the lines between work and life, and we believe in meeting people where they are. Our tools are used to keep up to speed on everything from work communication, to personal events that include friends and family, to changes in shared documents. This often means viewing email, calendars, or files in places where the default white mode may be less suitable, like darkened airplanes, movie theaters, or in bed at night.

Our design research specifically focused on these contexts where folks would want to use Dark Mode, and the response was very positive. While some Dark Mode experiences can be neon or overly bright, people felt that Outlook mobile kept the kind of relaxed feeling you might want in a dimly lit living room or bedroom. They described the experience as comfortable, crisp, clear, and aesthetically pleasing, a nod to how Dark Mode can reduce eye strain.

Dark Mode may also save battery life when you’re traveling or on the go for long stretches of time. We’re building in capabilities so following the next round of OS releases on iOS and Android, Outlook will automatically switch to Dark Mode depending on the preference you set. In the meantime, Outlook for Android automatically switches to Dark Mode when you choose Battery Saver. These perks all hold true for Dark Mode on Office.com.

A Design culture of creative collaboration

The seamlessness and flexibility that we’re building into Microsoft 365 design systems mirrors our own fluid creative process. We brought designers together from across the company to create a common Dark Mode experience for all our mobile and web apps. The creative energy that came from exchanging ideas and collaborating with new peers was one of the most fun parts of this entire effort.

Starting from the ground up and using the new gray palette for Fluent, our app teams began by aligning to the single palette. This included increasing contrast, brand color saturation, and consistency among details like how and when we use shadows when in Dark Mode.

We explored hundreds of color options against various backgrounds before selecting these muted color categories.

Future rollout plans for Dark Mode in Office apps

We’re excited to bring Dark Mode to even more of the Microsoft 365 product suite, starting with additional mobile experiences. Dark Mode comes to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for mobile with the launch of iOS 13, as well as iPad, where we know many people choose to use those apps. That same launch will also bring Dark Mode to SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, and To-Do on mobile.

There will be more experiences to follow — Dark Mode for Planner and OneDrive on web are coming down the pipe — so stay tuned for those rollout dates.
