December update to Windows 11 has given me black screen after logon

Update to Windows 11 has given me a black screen after logon on my desk top PC. I am part of the windows 11 insider project.

I have tried the shift, control, windows B beeps does nothing ..can get task manager to show on black screen and from there following no end of internet suggestions using cmd and run and more. There is no explorer.exe. in the process list ,done the suggested even to string in registry value.

Tried PC fix said there was a problem with PC..tried restore said did not complete ....tried remove windows newest installed features no avail . Tried recovery CD I had from last year ..said no boot system or something ...at the end of my Knowledge

After 4 hours yesterday I am steaming ..insider update accepted as usual and then on reboot this problem . Is there No way to phone to get guided through fixing this ?? I cannot be the only one, needs a patch . Any help please, thanks Kim

OK finally found the link to get a Microsoft chat assistant and it was a problem because of black screen could not do the permissions to remotely access my PC and so he told me to hold the shift key down whilst holding in the restart power button on my PC for 10 seconds ..that was supposed to take me to a blue screen to start a reinstall but it spent lots of time with the windows spinning wheel..... and the it just all came back on ????? he was still connected and so he dialed in and had a quick wiz around and said all was well ??

God what a nightmare.. coming out of this insider program as theirs no dedicated support for when it goes wrong like this..rolling back to a safe 10 lol

    Hello Kim.

    1) I'm sure you are aware that Insider builds are unstable by nature and for fixing bugs. It should not be on a PC you rely upon, only a test machine. If you want to leave Insider program see here:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/758075/how-to-switch-...

If you will report Insider Build bugs using the Feedback Hub in Start Menu, you may be able to help improve this product/experience - especially if you are willing to share logs and other requested information. While they will probably not see this here in the forums, Microsoft developers DO read feedback from customers that comes in via the Feedback Hub, so that is a great way to share your thoughts on how to better serve you as a customer.

    2) If any steps cannot be performed normally then try them in 1) Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet) or 2) Safe Mode, accessed by one of the illustrated steps in this guide: https://winaero.com/how-to-boot-windows-11-in-s...

You will need to use your password to get into Safe Mode as a PIN is not accepted.

If this is not enough I will help you do repairs from the Repair Mode or bootable media.

    3) Try these fixes for black screen after log in in Windows 11:

    https://itechhacks.com/fix-windows-11-black-scr...

    https://windowsreport.com/windows-11-black-scre...

(Avoid ad links which intrude into editorial copy, especially avoid Restoro, PC Repair Tool and Reimage ads)

    https://www.technewstoday.com/fix-black-screen-...

    https://www.lifewire.com/fix-windows-11-black-s...

    4) If you're unable to do the steps from Safe Mode then here is how to access the tools in WinRE Repair Mode or bootable media to do these repairs and others I'll give you to get WIndow started. One will always work:

Use whichever method works in this link to get into Repair Mode so you can try the necessary repairs or do a Reset:

    https://www.elevenforum.com/t/boot-to-advanced-...

Easiest is to force shutdown by holding in the power button. Do this twice. The third time you power on it should start into Repair Mode. Once in the Repair Mode try the numbered steps below.

It may be necessary to create bootable media on another PC to access Advanced Startup Options to try repairs, a Reset or do the Clean install. The bootable media has it's own set of files so that repairs or Reset might work better, doesn't require a password, and you'll have it to if necessary do the vastly superior Clean Install.

To create Windows 11 Installation Media on another PC install Media Creation Tool and follow the directions here under Create Installation Media, expand the link for "Before you get Started:" https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-downlo...

Insert media, boot it by powering up PC while pressing the BIOS Boot Menu Key given here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutor...

If the media won't boot you may need to enter BIOS/UEFI Setup (pressing key given in chart in link above) to turn off Fast Boot or Fast Startup first.

Choose the boot device as a UEFI device if offered, on second screen choose Repair Your Computer, then Advanced Troubleshoot Options, then:

    1) Try a System Restore to a point before the problem started, working backward.

    2) If that fails try Uninstall Updates button as far back as necessary to see if this was caused by an Update,

    3) Open the Command Prompt to:

    a) run System File Checker following Option Two here: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/use-system-file-c...

    and DISM: https://winaero.com/how-to-repair-windows-11-wi...

    b) run a full Disk Check: https://allthings.how/how-to-run-chkdsk-in-wind... which fixes glitches in the file system and can also signal a bad hard drive.

    c) trigger Safe Mode with Networking (for internet) or Safe Mode following https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-11/how-to-star... to roll back Updates & Drivers in Windows Update History, update your drivers from the PC/Motherboard manufacturer's website and try the other numbered repairs.

You can also create a new Local Admin account to replace yours: https://pureinfotech.com/create-local-administr...

    d) From the Command Prompt enable the built-in hidden Admin account using Option 5 here: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/enable-or-disable..., sign in leaving password blank, create a new Local Admin account to sign into, set up, move your files over, when ready delete the old account to convert the new one to MS Account:

https://pureinfotech.com/create-local-account-w.... Then hide the built-in Admin again.

    4) If those fail then go back to Troubleshoot Options to do a Reset. Choose to Save Nothing so it creates a new account (Rescue files if necessary first from Step 6 below) and Cloud Option to download latest fresh installation files instead of using corrupted onboard files.

    5) If that fails choose Install Now, then Custom Install, then at the drive selection screen delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, click Next to let it create needed partitions and start install - this makes it foolproof. Everything needed to Clean Install is here:

    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-do-clean-ins...

Create the Bootable media following the steps under Create Installation Media, clicking to read the link "Before you Start" at https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-downlo....

Make sure during the booted install to unplug all other drives, boot the media as a UEFI Device, choose Custom Install, delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space to get it cleanest, choose the Unallocated Space, click Next to auto-create and -format the needed partitions and begin install - this makes it foolproof.

After install expedite all Windows Updates including Optional until no more are offered. Then import any drivers from the PC maker's Support Downloads web page for your model that are newer, or branded instead of generic. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is how to keep the latest manufacturer's drivers current. Windows drivers are rarely enough.

    6) If you have files that aren't backed up you can use the same bootable media to try to rescue your files using these methods: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
