Deleted User Still on Sign-on Page

    I'm cleaning a laptop for re-sale.
    1. Added a new user called Admin_ID (with admin privilege)
    2. Deleted my OLD_ID (which had admin privilege) - chose the "delete all files" option
    3. Deleted remnants in C:\USERS\OLD_ID
    4. Re-booted
When I get to the sign-on screen, it says "Failed - wrong Password" and my OLD_ID is showing
When I select "another account", my OLD_ID and the new Admin_ID are both listed.
Choosing the new Admin_ID logs me on successfully.
How do I get rid of the OLD_ID?

    :)

  3. Duplicate user on sign in page

    Hi Andre,

Thanks for your response, I followed your instructions, but there are no duplicate accounts there, and the box is already unchecked.

Did you use Control Panel, Users to remove the old login while being logged in with the new user? If so, a complete removal will prompt as to saving or deleting the old user's documents, did you get that? I did a couple last week using that process without problems. Can't use Switch User as both could be logged in at the same time.

Did you have automatic login set up in netplwiz? Run netplwiz, make sure the box is checked for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Click apply.

You can also uncheck that box, click apply, then cancel on the next screen asking for a username and password, then apply again.

Berton - yes, that's exactly what I did.

NavyLCDR - as unintuitive as it is, I followed your sequence and it seems to have worked!

    Thanks.

I'm having this same exact issue. Deleted a user. When I reboot, at the Windows login, it comes up to the deleted user profile and password. I can sign in with a different user, but every time I reboot, it keeps coming back up. This is a Windows 10 Home computer. The netplwiz is not available in this version. Any ideas?
