    Dell desktop not restarting after newest Windows 10 update


    I have a Dell XPS 8920 desktop running Windows 10 Pro. Windows said I needed to restart to update to the latest update this morning. Pressed restart it started and after 20 minutes it never never completed, with the arrow cursor showing, and blue activity circle apparently showing activity but not completing. Followed the guidance suggested on another old post here, to restart 3 times to enter recovery mode. I don't get any recovery options or a screen to get to safe mode. Tried again and screen said Windows did not shut down cleanly and said it was recovering files. I waited almost two ho

    Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

    Windows 10 update being enabled.

    Anyway , You are luckier than me. My computer was locked directly after updated to Windows 10 . but the solution is easy.

    When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

    Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

    I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.
