2 questions arise concerning the 'revert', one is whether the computer was originally available with Win7, if not there may be no drivers for some of the resources on the motherboard. The other question is about whether you have a Product Key for Win7 or if a copy of Win7 has to be purchased [may be getting harder to find]. Being a new purchase it could be surmised it can't be easily 'reverted' to something not originally installed.

  5. Hi:

In addition to @Berton's excellent advice, I could be wrong, but I think that swapping out the OEM Win10 on a Dell system may void your Dell warranty (perhaps unless you purchase the Win7 key from Dell, and I doubt that's even possible).

    >>>I would definitely check with Dell before taking any sort of drastic measures such as replacing the OEM Win10 with Win7, regardless of the source of the Win7 key.

Someone more expert will correct me if I am wrong,*Wink

  6. Thanks guys.

Windows 10 pro came on the machine and I believe that this gives me downgrade rights. If not I have plenty of old win 7 licences in the office. The issue will be the drivers. I was really just wondering if any one has managed this on the new xps13.

    Cheers Thomas

  7. I seriously doubt it.

I would sure check with Dell first, unless you don't care about the possibility of voiding your warranty.
    But it's up to you.

    >>Having said that, someone more expert will correct me if I am wrong about that,

    Good luck!

I would really suggest you ride it out for a while. Windows 10 is different, but it won't take long to get used to it.

Especially since you have a touchscreen.

  9. I have now spent way too many hours fighting with windows 10 bugs and issues. I have had enough and there really appears to be very little that I need in windows 10 or that works better than in windows 7. I simply do not have enough time in my life to go through this pain for the simple reason that Microsoft has launched an operating system too early. Windows 7 just worked. Day after day. Installation after installation. Little did we are suspect that this tsunami of BS was about the be launched at us from Microsoft. I wish I could turn back the clock 6 months. I remember the summer with fond memories of a time when computers just worked.

My plan is to roll back to windows 7 on all our office machines and wait for the browser based world of computing that is coming.

I have managed to turn off the stupid advertorial tiles that made windows 8 so unpopular. Honestly, what is the point of putting program icons inside large coloured boxes. Waste of space. And why does everything have to be so ugly? Why spindly little lines to denote windows? Hard to see and hard to read.

I am trying to get back to widows 7 on several machines in our office that inadvertedly ended up being upgraded to windows 10. my challenged has been this new xps13 skylake machine which came with windows 10 pro preinstalled.

According to Microsoft home page I can downgrade to windows 7 for free. But only from windows 10 pro. I found the link in these forums.

My challenge is the xps13 drivers and Dell.

Here is just one bug. Call it the "bug of the day":

In the File Explorer" the seach box would show a pop up of recent search terms when you are trying to find a file on your hard drive. This great little feature is no longer working. This is costing me time. It is anoying and not neccessary.

Sorry, but I used to have a life.

    Regards
    Thomas

If you have a spare hard drive I would try it with that first. If it doesn't work out you could always pop in the original. You would not have to waist your product key either. You would have 30 days to find drivers. Here is a link on how to backup your existing drivers

Solved Driver Backup in Windows 10 Pro - Windows 10 Forums

Here is a program to help you find them but I never used it. Someone on another forum uses it, it's free to try but $35 if you like it.

DriverPack Solution - Best Drivers installation Software

I have used DriverMax with good results but you can only download 1 driver a day. It's free but there is a paid version you can download as many as you want.

  11. I use Auslogics Driver Updater you have to pay for it but it runs in the background and lets you know when a driver is out of date, you then click download it and driver is installed then you do a restart and bingo driver is up to date.
Does as many drivers as needed.
Used it since Windows 8.1 never let me down

  12. Thank you guys. I am sorry for being a bit negative (actually quite a lot) and grumpy. Thanks for your patience and great ideas. I need to find a spare SSD but this should not be a problem. I have never cloned an SSD yet, but I guess it will be similar to a HDD.

Good ideas and I will try it.

I'm curious about this because I just returned a Surface Pro 4 for the same reasons. I have upgraded to W10 on my desk top and even though it was a PITA I have used info on this forum to get 95% of the way I want it. With the laptop however, I got no where. I spent untold man-hours trying to get it to work, twice resetting it completely to start over again. I was hoping the XPS13 wouldn't have the same issues. I wondering how different things are in a laptop vs a desktop.

  14. This is most likely going to be the case... The system will not run well at all. Because the XPS 13 (current iteration I gather) never came with 7, this will cause some driver issues and most likely BSODs.

Now that you understand the risks, if you wish to be a risk-taker, back up your install using Dell's Backup and Recovery Software. Once you've done that, download Rufus and you can mount a 7 ISO to the USB. Boot from the USB, and do the clean install. If it goes haywire (which it most likely will), roll back using the backup image made by the Dell Backup and Recovery.

Once again, I highly advise you not to do this... but go ahead if you'd like.

P.S. to clarify for @MoxieMomma or anyone else wondering, what the OP would like to do would never void the warranty. Installing a different operating system or version/install of Windows wouldn't ever be something that voids the warranty, as people have been doing it for years.

  15. I stand corrected.
    Thanks for setting me straight.

Is this true, even if the OEM system did not come with downgrade rights?
I presume Dell will still support the hardware warranty.
But will Dell still "support" the system (e.g. OS and drivers and software) after installing a new OS that is NOT OEM, especially if it's not Win10?

    <just curious>

    Thanks,
    MM
