Windows 10: Desktop audio going through microphone

Greetings


For some reason my PC started to send all my desktop sound through my microphone. I can see the volume levels under recording devices being fairly low, but friends that I talk to on Discord tell the desktop sound goes through all clear. If I mute my microphone on my headset then the sounds sent to Discord from my desktop are even louder.


I can stop the sound from playing by enabling Acoustic Echo Cancellation in Realtek, but that ruins the quality of the microphone.


This happened out of the blue and I was wondering if anyone at microsoft could share some knowledge on updates or whatever that has happened in the past days.


I have tried to enable "listen to this device" which creates an audio loop. I have also looked at stereo mix and that has been disabled the entire time.


I am really clueless at this point since it seems to me like I did nothing to deserve this.

Can't get microphone icon onto desktop

  Did you check by connecting the
  microphone on a different computer?
  

This issue could have occurred due to these reasons:

1. Incorrect Microphone settings.

2. Corrupt driver.

Try the steps listed here:

Method 1:

I suggest you to run Recording Audio troubleshooter which will find and fix common issue.

• Press Windows Logo keys from the keyboard.
• Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.
• In the “Troubleshooting” Window, click on “View All” on the left pane.
• Click on “Recording Audio”.
• Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.
• Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

Method 2:

Make sure that the microphone that you are using is not disabled and is set as default in the computer. Follow these steps to check this:

• Right-click on the volume icon and select “Recording devices”.
• Now, right-click on an empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.
• Select “Microphone” and click on “Properties” and make sure that the
  microphone is enabled.
• You may also check if the microphone that you are using is
  set as default.

Method 3:

If the issue persists, I suggest you to download and install latest audio driver from the computer manufacturer website and check if it helps.

• Type “Troubleshooter” in the search box and press Enter.
• Click on ‘View All’ on the top left corner.
• Click on “Recording Audio” from the list and follow the prompts for troubleshooting.

Built in microphone not working

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps

Method 1: I suggest you to set microphone as default device and check.

• 
  Right click on the volume icon in the system tray and then click "Recording devices"
  
• 
  Right click on the blank space in the popped up window and then select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices".
  
• 
  Right click on Microphone and then click "Enable".
  
• 
  Highlight the microphone and then choose "Set as Default Device".
  
• 
  Click Apply and OK.
  

Step 2: Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.

• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled. Follow the steps given to check that:
  
• 
  Right click on the volume icon and select “Recording devices”.
  
• 
  Now, Right Click on an empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.

  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.
  

And also update the audio drivers from the manufacturer web site and install.
