Desktop "auto dimming" - not power option related

This isn't the first time I've had this issue, and not sure how it was resolved last time. The desktop icons are "dimmed" and light up when I click on the start menu. This is particularly difficult for me as I'm visually impaired and brightness/contrast levels are crtitical. Some potentially relevant background:

    • Win 10 desktop, no light sensor on my monitor or anything.

    • Power settings set to "samsung high performance". Followed some goggle link and double checked adapative brightness and some other stuff hadn't been set incorrectly. It wasn't.

    • I occassionally switch to High Res theme, and have DPI scaling in place

    • I don't know for sure, but I think this issue resurfaced at around the time I updated my nvidia drivers.

    • When hunting for possible relevant menu options, I saw a "focus assist" item. I don't know if relevant, or what it does, because clicking on it leads to a "crash" (window just closes).

    Any ideas?

    :)

  2. How to disable auto screen dimming?

    Hello,

This issue could be related to the power plan settings on your computer. To help you out with your concern, we suggest that you try to disable the adaptive brightness on your power plan settings. To do so, you may follow the steps below:

    • Type Power Options in Search/Cortana.
    • On the left pane, click Choose when to turn off the display option to open the Edit Plan Settings window.
    • Click Change advanced power settings to open Power Options dialog.
    • Expand Display and then expand Enable adaptive brightness.
    • Select the Off option for both On battery and
      Plugged in.

After disabling the adaptive brightness, check if you will still

    experience the issue.

Keep us posted so that we can further help.

Screen dimming and brightening on its own.

Sounds very familiar, I get that irritation on my Laptop now and again. Some of this is probably also applicable to Desktops. It comes under the general banner of "Adaptive brightness and Power saving".

    1) Power Options - Power and sleep > Additional power settings > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
Scroll down the list to Display and expand that branch.
    Disable adaptive brightness.
Make Dimmed display brightness the same as Display brightness.
    Apply > OK etc.

    2) Intel HD graphics - Right click desktop > Graphics Properties...
Power > Plugged in > Graphics Power Plans > Maximum performance.
Other modes may auto-dim/bright the display.
Apply etc. You can save that Profile if you wish.

You may have other options, but the principle is the same.

I always have to do both to stop the irritating adaptive brightness thing.

This is addition to similar things on a Monitor/TV.

Desktop "auto dimming" - not power option related

Can't disable auto-dimming from dark to bright background apparently

    Hi there,

I would like to disable Auto dimming on my ASUS VivoBook S15 S510UQ, I tried to disable Adaptive Brightness from the Power Options and also switching off from Intel's graphic card control centre the Power Saving Technology thing but nothing changed.

Right now I am on battery, on sunlight coming from out of the window and I can see the notebook playing some funny stuff with the dimming anyway.

It seems to be related to when you switch from a dark background - say ACDsee photo viewer - back to file explorer that has a white background.

    How to fix?

    thanks!
