Windows 10: Desktop icons keep rearranging

Update: Still holding. Desktop icons have not moved since last update! Seems that toggle "show desktop icons" worked (for me). Would be interesting to get feedback from others who have had the same issue.

 

Update2: Not holding anymore. Desktop icons started to move again. So this was not a fix sorry. It is very weird. For a few days none moved. Then I logged into a different account on the same desktop and after that the icons have moved rather frequently when logging in to my usual account. But not all the time. And only about 5 of them move to the same unwanted position leaving empty spaces in between. If anyone can recap the registry fix mentioned in this thread it would be appreciated. Does it work?

This problem is making me mad, so mad.
I Just reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch, created 2 local user accounts, same problem.
It only happens when I change user, no problem after a restart + logon with the same user.
I use a EliteBook 840 G1, installed no drivers. So for me it's clearly a nasty bug in Windows 10.
Maybe hardware related. Gave feedback to Microsoft months ago.

 

I have noticed that a few of the people have commented that they have hi-res monitors. This makes fonts etc too hard to read. So scaling is used, each scale has a different font layout. Some programs I use are DPI aware, which means they can appear the same in any DPI view. The computer sometimes starts up incorrectly, which puts you into the native DPI mode. When this happens the DPI aware programs reverse and show distorted images etc. This is weird, because it means the windows DPI control is shit. So it is no wonder that crap happens. If you want to eliminate the problem, use 1:1 mapping (ie no scaling), because Microsoft haven't worked out that people are using hi-res monitor.

 

Update 3: A workaround. Turn off (uncheck) "Align icons to grid." First have it checked to arrange icons to the positions you want. Then uncheck it. The icons may of course be repositioned by accident when you use them. However, if they move they are close to the grid-aligned positions. This is better than having them moved all over the screen. This has been working for me for a couple of days now. And by the way, I have not changed hardware since the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Never had this issue with Windows 7 so this is truly a Windows 10 issue. I am using a desktop with dual Dell monitors with native resolutions of 1920 x 1200 pixels.

 

This worked for me:
*right click on a blank space on the desktop
*the pop-up box shows "AMD Catalyst Control Center" first
*left click on that.
*sit back and wait a couple of minutes until the hour glass stops popping up.
*problem solved. (at least for me.)

I've had this problem since I got my laptops. From what I can tell it seems to be the ones I've used are the ones that move. I have a list of them on the left side of the screen that don't seem to move though I haven't really tracked it diligently. They are folders I use but mostly to dump things in until I need them again to keep my desktop relatively icon free (which with a bug like this is incredibly handy!) but the ones I have been accessing the most seem to be the ones that jump to different places. If I haven't move the icon or used the icon it seems to stay put. But if I have moved it or used it then it doesn't. Accessing the file folders through navigation rather than clicking them appears to not trigger the movement. Not that any of this matters but if anyone notices this is true for them then identifying triggers might help them to resolve it as it would help identify a likely cause.

 

Please tell me someone has figured out a real way to handle this by now!?!? I cannot stand another day of these icons moving every time I tab out of a window!

this is not a problem inherent in windows 10, its been in since at least windows 7. They either can't fix it or are not interested in fixing it. None of the check-boxes work as they should.

 

It breaks, EVERY time the screen size/resolution changes, or you plug in extra monitor, or from some random windows update, they should just remove the auto arrange feature (as it stands now) and have a manual version to do a "one time" auto-arrange or grid snap if the user chooses to. ...And if icons are off the edge of screen, it can pull them on temporarily, but if you re-start or change resolutions it should remember the original position and put them back there once the screen res allows. The original position should only ever change if the user moves the icon manually, or manually clicks the grid/auto arrange button (at that time only)

 

I bought my gf a laptop a month ago and she was having this exact issue. I found this one and it worked like a charm but I figured I would share it here to help everyone with this annoying issue. Hope it helps! *Biggrin
In regedit go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PoliciesThen create Key "Explorer"
Add new DWORD value "NoSaveSettings" and set to 0
To be safe, I exported HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ and called it noSaveSettingsRestore.reg
Now Reboot and the problem was solved for us.
