Windows 10: Desktop not making sound

My computer started turning off during use out of nowhere a few weeks ago. The turning off has stopped, but now my computer isn't making any sound. Hovering above the sound button says "the audio service is not running." When I go to services and attempt to start the audio service it says, "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer." Where do I go from here? I've tried to reset my computer, but it says it is unable to reset. There are also updates back to January that are stuck on pending download that won't start if that info helps.

Good surround sound headset

I know you say you're not that guy, but stepping into the $250+ range really brings a change in build quality that might have you never having to buy another set. Otherwise, getting 6 speakers with decent sound in a headset is hard, and that's what you are asking for, and I have no suggestions, but just a bump up the list. *Stick Out Tongue

As per the description I understand that you are unable to hear the email notification sound.

I suggest you to try the following steps and check if it helps:

  Go to Control Panel Items
  
• 
  Click on Sound.
  
• 
  Click on Sounds Tab.
  
• 
  Click on Desktop Mail Notification.
  
• 
  Click TEST.
  
• 
  Click OK.
  

And check if you are able to hear the email notification sound.

Sound Quality

One thing that sticks out from looking at your "My Computer" specs. You list "ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)" which suggests you do not have the correct sound hardware driver. Your motherboard has Realtek sound and the first step is to install the Realtek sound drivers. My ASUS also came with Sonic Studio 2 which is a sound enhancement package. Check the ASUS install disc to see if you have something similar.

May not be a speaker problem.
