Back to the main subject. I don't think the desktop is going to leave, at least not any time soon. Desktop is what people know, it's what they work on. You can't just throw something new and different at them! The reason there are so many Windows H8ters out there is because MS forced in a new metro style of Windows! Yes, people will get used to it, but it is going to take time. I may be wrong, but I don't think the desktop will be leaving. *Wink

  3. Desktop programs will be here for a long long time. I don't see that changing in the near future. I can see Microsoft making Metro Apps run and look like they are running on the desktop though. They have already moved that way by adding the title bar and taskbar to Metro Apps. If they made them so you could resize the window like you can a desktop program things would be more fluid between the two UI's. A lot of Apps don't need to be run in full screen or even snapped to half screen.

I agree that the desktop is not going to go away, I know I will always want a desktop in addition to the other computing devices I own: laptop, 2 netbooks, 2 tablets and a smartphone.

But, for the majority of users, a desktop is overkill. I believe my sister is a fairly typical computer user. She has never read this forum or any other computer related forum. She has a desktop running XP that was purchased at least 10 years ago. She rarely uses it so has no intention of moving it off of XP. In addition, she has a laptop running Win 7 but has pretty much stopped using that as well since she got an Android tablet a couple of years ago. Her tablet is all she needs for 95% of what she wants to do with a computer (mostly email, web surfing and social networking).

There will always be a minority of people (like the readers of this forum) that will want a desktop but our ranks are shrinking, not growing.

  6. The casual crowd I hang out with these days pretty much fit that bill. They do social media and e-mail. Just about anything would work for them. One female friend was about to buy a small tablet. When I told her Android wasn't Windows she had that deer in the headlights look. Then when I mentioned Jellybean and Kit Kat she thought I was making it all up. She actually thought I was making fun of her and got a bit upset.
Most of them don't have any idea what version of Windows they are running on their PC. It's just Windows. When something doesn't work they have no idea why or how to fix it. Most of my family and friends are this way too.
I've always had at least one desktop PC in the house, and don't see that changing any time soon. I game on it and use it almost exclusively during the winter months. I also have a laptop that I use in the summer. I'm retired and don't travel much so it only goes about as far as my deck most of the time. I enjoy being able to take it outside and just chill out on Netflix etc. It does have its benefits if I have to make a house call to fix a friends PC too.

And when it comes to gaming, I don't think the PC will ever die out for them. Building your own gaming PC is the norm for serious gamers. Consoles are nice, but you have so much versatility with something YOU have built, as far as I know one cannot build a console, I may be wrong and if so, please correct me.

  9. The availability of PC games is pretty dismal around here. When I go into Staples or Future shop, there are rows and rows of console games, and next to nothing in the way of games for the PC. It's almost like it was an afterthought. Target didn't have any PC games at all. Walmart is almost as bad, what they do have for PC games is crap. If I want one I pretty much have to buy it online. The PC section in these stores is similar. Lots of laptops and tablets, and then a smattering of towers. Nothing I would call performance oriented either.

I was referring more to the graphics on a PC, but here's a good video which expresses my point.

You can still run full powered applications. You can get even more applications through the Windows App Store. So what's wrong with metro, what are you missing besides the old Start Menu?

No, you weren't entirely wrong... I'm one of the ones less than thrilled by metro. Win8 works fine for me, as I simply added "Classic Shell" to the mix, and that make me a very happy camper.

I still use the taskbar setup from winXP. I can't always explain what I like, but I know it when I see it. And vice versa, of course....
