Windows 10: Device Manager Refreshing - Related to Network

I noticed slight stutters when gaming recently and while troubleshooting device drivers found that Device Manager was refreshing every 10-12 seconds or so and sometimes two or three times rapidly. These corresponded with the stutters in games. I assumed it was a USB hub or device that was flaky but after much troubleshooting, I narrowed it down to the network card. When I disabled it, the refreshes stopped. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled and it was fine for a while but would eventually come back. The last time it came back, the uninstall/reinstall did not work at all. I disabled the wired NIC and connected to my wireless network and the same stutter occurred. So, I know it's not the network device but just being connected to the network. Back on wired, I decided to try disabling network discovery. That fixed it! However, I noticed my network type was set to public/guest so I switched it over to private and the refreshes came back. I made sure network discovery and file and print sharing were disabled even under the private network profile and that didn't work. I set it back to public/guest and it's fine again, as long as network discovery is off for that profile too. I'm really confused about what the actual cause is now. It has to be something on my network that my PC is detecting but the whole network profile thing was very odd too. At this point, I'm still not sure if the problem won't return eventually. It would be nice to set my network back to private and enable network discovery but it's not really breaking anything I'm doing. Any ideas?

Network devices listed under Unknown in Device Manager


I have a Dell Inspiron M731R laptop upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Home 64-Bit that suddenly quit connecting to the home network. Was using wireless, so switched to an Ethernet cable, but still no luck. I just discovered that ALL of the network-related devices are now listed under an "Unknown" tab in the Device Manager. A check of properties of each item in that folder says they are all working properly, but that obviously isn't the case. I tried uninstalling each of the 4 items, but when they are recognized again they still show up under the Unknown tab. Any suggestions would be welcome.

 

Device Manager keeps refreshing - due to network adapters

Hi Timm,

Device Manager refresh tends to happen when a new hardware is plugged in or removed, whether its a flash drive, and/or etc. This also happens when a driver is not working properly in which the Device Manager attempts to refresh to restart the said driver.
Plausible reason is that your Network adapter requires update since all this started right after upgrading to Windows 10. If you haven't done so, you can update it by following the steps below:

• Go to Device Manager and right click on Network Adapters.
• On the drop down, click on "Update Driver".
• Follow the instruction in the Update Driver Software wizard.

Also as an alternative check if this issue persist on Safe Mode. You can go to this link for the steps on how to boot to safe
mode. You can also go to your PC manufacturer website for the latest driver update.

No hardware listed in Device manager?

I don't konw whathappend but in Device manager and in my Network connections there is nothing where there used to be a Modem listed and all my hardware in Device Manager. What happend and how do I fix this?
