Difficulties with Reactivating Windows 10 After Replacing Motherboard

I recently had to change my motherboard, because I was having issues with it. After replacing it, I reinstalled Windows 10 as well. Naturally, I had to reactivate Windows 10, however, when I tried to input the 25-character product key, I got the following error message:Just to clarify my product key isn't from a Windows 7 copy that was upgraded to Windows 10, it is a standalone key for a Windows 10 Pro copy. The major hardwarde change is the motherboard. The CPU, RAM, GPU, etc. are all the same/ How can I get this resolved? I am located in Eastern Europe if this is of any importance. Thank you

    :)

  2. Difficulty Reactivating Windows After Replacing Motherboard

    Hello,

I've had to replace my motherboard and CPU after a catastrophic power failure. After reinstalling Windows (unfortunately, I had to reformat the drives in the process), I am unable to activate it.

I tried troubleshooting the activation and selecting the old motherboard using "I changed hardware on this device recently," but it simply responded that it was "Unable to activate Windows."

Is there anything I can do to get this machine reactivated?

  3. Can't reactivate Windows 10 Pro after replacing motherboard

    Hi,

I've just replaced a faulty motherboard in my PC and tried to reactivate Windows 10 Pro via the Windows Activation troubleshooter. The license linked to my account is an upgrade from a retail version of a previous version (so i should be able to reactivate
it). After selecting the correct device to activate I am presented with the following error message:

    Unable to activate Windows

We can’t reactivate Windows on this device. Try again later.

You can also activate this device by going to the Store and purchasing a genuine copy of Windows.

    Go to Store

The "Learn more" page referred to does not help as I have just followed the steps listed on that page to get to where I am now.

  4. Difficulties with Reactivating Windows 10 After Replacing Motherboard

win 10 motherboard change, reactivating windows

    Hi Famie,

If you are planning to change your motherboard, you will still be able to activate your Windows 10. In Windows 10 version 1607, there is a feature that you can link your Microsoft account to Windows 10 digital license on your device.
This can help you reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter if you make a significant hardware change later, such as replacing the motherboard.

That being said, we suggest that you follow the steps given on this article
to reactivate your Windows 10 after a hardware change.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

If you think this was useful, do not hesitate to "mark it as an answer" to help those are facing the same problem.
