Windows 10: DirectX 9 on Windows 11

We have a desktop application we sell that requires DirectX 9 to function. If our customers upgrade their computers to Windows 11 are they going to have any issues with the software running/installing DirectX 9? Are there any ramifications or things we need to be aware of related to software that uses DirectX 9 running on Windows 11?As I've searched online and read through various forums etc. I am seeing a lot of conflicting information but I haven't been able to find anything definitive or documented, so any authoritative help on this subject would be great.Thanks in advance!

I have DirectX 12, but application requires DirectX 11

Hello.

I do have directX, but just not 11, i have 12. My question is why I cant run a directX 11 app with directX 12. The link sent was a link to the directX installation. Please read the question before posting the answer.

You can also manually download and apply the following update package that updates DirectX to the latest version.

• DirectX 11.2 is included in Windows 8.1, Windows RT and Windows Server 2012 R2.
  
  Note There is no standalone update package for DirectX 11.2. You can only install this DirectX version through
  Windows Update in Windows 8.1, Windows RT and Windows Server 2012 R2.
• DirectX 11.1 for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1:
  • Platform Update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (KB2670838)
• DirectX 11.0 for Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2:
  • Update for Windows Vista (KB971512)
  • Update for Windows Server 2008 (KB971512)
  • Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB971512)
  • Update for Windows Server 2008 for x64-based Systems (KB971512)
• DirectX 9.0c for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
  • Download DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime

Some applications and games require DirectX 9. However, your computer includes a more recent version of DirectX. If you install and then run an application or game that requires DirectX 9, you might receive an error message such as "The program can't start
because d3dx9_35.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

To resolve this issue, go to the following Microsoft website to install DirectX End-User Runtime:
DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer
Note When you run this package, no change is made to your version of DirectX, Direct3D 9, Direct3D 10.x, Direct3D 11.x, DirectInput, DirectSound, DirectPlay, DirectShow, or DirectMusic.

To check which version of DirectX is on your computer, follow these steps:

• Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap
  Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click
  Search.) Type dxdiag in the search box, and then tap on click
  dxdiag.exe.
  
  Click the Start button, type dxdiag in the search box, and then press Enter. Click the
  Start button, and then click Run. Type dxdiag in the
  Run box, and then press Enter.
• Click the System tab, and then, under System Information, check the DirectX version number.

Note Currently, DirectX Diagnostic Tool may show DirectX 11 as the DirectX version number for DirectX 11.2 and DirectX 11.1.

 

Microsoft Store: DirectX 9 required

We appreciate the update. Since the issue is still the same even if you have DirectX 9 or later, we suggest that you reinstall your graphic card drivers instead. Follow the steps below:

• Press Windows Key + X and choose Device Manager.
• Go to Display Adapters section and locate your graphic card driver.
• Right click the driver and choose Uninstall.
• Check Remove the driver software for this device and click
  OK.
• After you’ve uninstalled the driver, restart your computer.
• When your computer restarts, go to your graphic card manufacturer’s website and download the latest drivers for your graphic card.
• Install the downloaded drivers.
