  3. Options anyone? I just got word in that Neosmart Technologies well known for the EasyBCD app and recovery disk images has a One-click Windows 10 rollback utility. Even for those who are trying to get 10 on but end up with a failed upgrade can used this to roll back to the previous version if not build apparently.

This would be for those who didn't see the guide here in time however as well as for those seeing failed upgrade attempts. Otherwise the steps outlined here have been found to be the most effective in preventing 10 from replacing the previous version's installation. With two systems each seeing 10/7 dual boots the guide here has been put to the test to see those results. *Smile

The blog page for this one can be looked over at A utility for fast, free, and simple Windows 10 uninstallation That can be passed along to anyone who doesn't want you to touch their machine but still doesn't want 10 going on.

  5. Feel free to add that as well as the guide here into my sig anytime! As you know anyone who would come here looking for help will follow the steps in the guides here. Option One being mainly intended for rolling back to a previous Insider Preview build while Option Two for going back to the previous version when things are still left intact like the Windows.old folder

The app there is mainly something you would toss at others on the other hand who wouldn't and won't allow you to make any changes on their machines when offered at all and might otherwise look out in the wild for lazy "quick and easy" solutions and possibly end up being bug bombed with something malware laced.

(know a few hard heads like that until they get hit with something and suddenly want help. Keep telling them the 10 app can be removed but.. *Rolleyes)

  6. Hi Shawn,

I have a friend whose Windows 10 upgrade is scheduled, but she's just found out that her copy of Windows 7 was installed on a volume licence, so she isn't eligible for the upgrade.

Would this tutorial be the best way for her to get rid of the W10 upgrade and also stop it bothering her in the future?

    Thanks

    Hello Maggy, *Smile

If it's scheduled to be downloaded and installed, then it should. Be sure to also disable the GWX icon.

  8. Disable Upgrade to Windows 10 Update in Windows 7 or 8.1

Seeing the 10 app removed entirely also entails hiding the next check for updates and after a few more checks when the same update number will appear again even after the initial hide. With 10/7 dual boot going here I have to keep watch while in the 7 on two machines while also having seen the upgrade feature disabled following the guide here. So far no reappearance of the 10 app has been seen.

I should note that since IE came included in Windows with the exception of the newer releases being downloaded separately for the older versions to see IE gone entirely took a manual edit of the System Registry to track down the correct keys and nothing else was touched. That would then allow a fresh install of the same or newer release of IE or not to have it on at all. This was something only advised for the more experienced users of course.

Likewise but differently instead the 10 app arrives as a separate update which can be hidden but still needs to be watched out for after a few manual checks for updates are seen following that being uninstalled following identifying it and watching out it doesn't get on again whenever you boot into one of the previous versions. So far however with both desktops each having 10/7 dual boots the guide here has prevented seeing this on the 7 sides.

MS also made some changes to the 10 app as well from initially reserving the copy to simply seeing the upgrade take place without a deny option. For that other person's pc there however you may want to see a full system image of the drive made in advance and stored on a separate drive in the event the upgrade doesn't go well?!

Sometimes upgrades can come out real buggy at times! I still have to wonder if the other guide would be the better route as far as seeing a planned clean install take place. Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First - Windows 10 Forums

I also put something else to the test as well but on VM only for those who end up with bad upgrades to manually see a clean install by way of the commonly hidden from view "$Windows~BT" folder found at the root of the C drive following any upgrade to 10 or between 10 builds. At first the option for a direct repair install only was to see the full PC Refresh type option you would end using anyways to clean up after a failed or shaky upgrade install.

I mention the GenuineTicket.xml option as a potential way to save the previous version activated by volume license status that could be applied to any clean install you might find necessary if you go ahead and allow the upgrade by Windows Updates to proceed. This would be something to consider.

You'll never guess it in a 100yrs.! A friend out of the blue hands me his laptop and said to get 10 off of his machine namely the 10 app KB3035583 update immediately one of the two "important" updates immediately seen once I got the laptop connected again! Time to disable the OS upgrade option as well. "Option One please!!" *Roflmao2

Disable Upgrade to Windows 10 Update in Windows 7 or 8.1

    Hi All,
I'm new to this forum, but have been a member on SevenForums for a while and came accross this link from there.
I have a question about whether I have the DWORD value correct in the registry to NOT have the WinX upgrade try to update my computer. I'm not quite ready to make the leap to 10 yet. I know this may sound like a dumb question, but sometimes things sound counter-intuitive to me. Like the DWORD "DisableOSUpgrade" and posted values 0=enable and 1=disable as shown here...

Here is a snip of my registry after applying the "Disable_Upgrade_to_Windows_10_Update.reg"...

Could anyone please confirm the this is the correct setting to NOT get Win10 upgrade updates?
Thanks to Shawn and all the other great people that help in these forums.

Hello Frogman, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

This is correct to prevent getting the upgrade to Windows 10 update in Windows 7 or 8.

However, the free upgrade to Windows 10 offer has expired, so you should no longer get the update anyways.

  15. The 10 app or upgrade assistant can also be removed if that is found now that the initial free promotional offer is over. I had to use the registry value change as well in order to maintain the existing 10/7 dual boots on two separate machines and have been seeing working results thanks the SF guide for that. And glad to see you make over to Ten F from SF! 51Frogman *Smile
