Windows 10: Disable WebDAV caching for large files

Hi,

I use WebDAV on my NAS to access files remotely over the internet. The WebDAV volume can be conveniently mounted on the remote machines (Win 10) at startup via net use and it works fine without any third-party tools. However, Windows' own WebDAV client implementation is very clunky. In particular, it appears that any access to the remote file (even a single click on it in the file explorer) requires it to download the entire file and cache it locally before being able to access any portion of the file. This makes WebDAV unusable with large files, for example playing a movie file few GB in size. I'm aware that WebDAV doesn't provide block access like SMB (though this could be emulated via download/resume), but there must be a smarter way to handle remote files, especially "streamable" ones like movie files.

Is there a way to control how WebDAV files are cached in the Windows WebDAV client, e.g. just cache a few MByte and download more on demand? Is there a better implementation of this with a third-party client? I know I could use SMB over VPN, but I prefer WebDAV if possible because it requires the least amount of setup (no VPN ), is also encrypted and the performance is a bit better, since it has less overhead and can deal with the internet latency better than SMB.

15 Mo File size limit for WebDav transfer on N8 ?

I coded a simple and small WebDAV server (http://www..de/wordpress/projects/webdavserver/) and face the same problem It seems the maximum file size is limited by file
manager depending on free space on C. Any developer an idea how to disable caching for WebDAV files or how to move the cache to E? BR,

 

N8 and webdav on Windows 7 32b

I did set up a webdav share on win 7 (64 bits though) and managed to access it from my N8.

I'm using basic authentication, didn't manage to make windows authentication work.

Remember that, using that type of authentication, http access is disabled. You must use SSL (hence generate your own SSL certificate, you can do it in IIS7 management console).

I can list folders, download files, create folders from the phone. I CANNOT upload files, which is very weird and, since the share is working perfectly form other computers, i'm tempted to think that it's a N8 problem.

But I'll try again with a different setup and let you know. If I succed, I'll post a step by step guide.

 

Clear the 'cache' in file explorer for already used picture tags?


If you set some tags for your *.jpg pictures, the windows 10 file explorer shows them in the "details pane" on the right side.





This list can get very long and with some wrong or no longer used entries.
How can I clear this list / cache / suggestions?

Or how can I stop the file explorer to suggests already used Tags?
