Display driver stopped responding and has recovered - AMD

Had a problem with my mother's Windows 10 tower and I mistakenly attributed all the errors to a bad upgrade from W7 to W10. My mom says she never selected the upgrade - that Microsoft did it on it's own while installing updates. I started a thread on the Updates & Activation forum detailing the struggles I went through before I finally bit the bullet, reformatted the hard drive and did a complete reinstall.
Updates - Trying to resolve 1 Problem brings up another. And another

Unfortunately, the reinstall did nothing to alleviate the problem listed in this thread's title. After it finished booting, a message displayed on the desktop for at least 5 minutes indicating that Windows was searching for a suitable graphics driver. After it installed the AMD Radeon 7540D driver we began to get those 'Display driver has stopped...' messages. A check of device manager showed the first image. I uninstalled the driver and rebooted, Windows reinstalling that same driver. I went to this forum and accessed the sticky at the top of the page - Latest AMD Catalyst Graphics Driver for Windows 10 and attempted to download the latest driver. It told me that the best driver had already been installed. I have no idea what to do now.

Try uninstalling the driver again using the free program Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and reinstall the driver again manually with the latest you got from AMD website. Just google up DDU.

One of the problems is that I'm so incredibly ignorant about the drivers for Windows. I don't remember exactly what graphics driver my mother had on her original tower. I believe she was running Windows 8, which came preinstalled. When the updates upgraded her to W10 I assume the drivers all remained the same. All I remember is that it was some sort of AMD driver.

And as I said, after the reinstall Windows spent a fair amount of time searching for a suitable graphics driver. I have no idea how it decided on the AMD Radeon 7540D driver. Is that based on the motherboard?

Then when I clicked on Brink's sticky about the Latest AMD Catalyst Graphics Driver for Windows 10, I was presented with a bewildering array of choices. I chose Windows 10, 64 bit from the heading Radeon™ R5 235X, R5 230, R5 220, HD 8470, HD 8350, HD 8000 (D/G variants), HD 7000 – HD 7600, HD 6000, and HD 5000 Series, but that choice was based on nothing more than what Windows had installed on it's own. Well, what if that was wrong in the first place? For a homemade tower, how is one supposed to determine precisely what drivers to download?

I'm perfectly willing to follow your advice as soon as I get over to my mother's. I gave her back the tower a couple days ago because she was tired of fighting with the old Vista laptop I'd loaned her. I just don't know for sure what driver to download.

Go to this site: Download Drivers

Choose "Manually select your driver" than the rest of fields as it applies to that computer (APU desktop or mobile), than your processor, windows 10 etc. as drivers are different for various GPUs, dedicated and included in the processor. (APU = Accelerated Processing Unit), with AMD its the name of graphic processor + CPU).
Judging by your post it should look something like this:
