Windows 10: Display settings randomly changing

I use a laptop - Windows 10. Used in one of three ways. Stand alone, 50% of the time with a power cable attached. Or, connected to a monitor via HDMI, with a power cable. Monitor is latest on market. On occasion, to a projector, latest on market, via HDMI.

When connected to the monitor - sometimes when the laptop is connected, the display is not configured to duplicate to the monitor. Sometimes it duplicates without me doing anything. If the laptop is locked or goes to sleep, upon waking, sometimes the monitor is connected and sometimes it isn't.

I never have to duplicate the display when connecting to my projector.

Drivers, software up to date. Only one HDMI port, so no need to make changes. Same monitor every time. 'Projecting to' disabled. I do not extend.

Seems like a 3rd world problem, but removing my laptop from its stand every time to make and keep changes is not how this machine should work.

A fix?

To reset the settings back to default, follow these steps:

• Go to your desktop, right click and select Display Settings.
• Choose the appropriate settings from the options under Display.

Let us know if the above steps resolved the issue.
