    It has failed when you can no longer boot from it, it is recommended to prevent that by acting beforehand.

    Not sure I understand you. Perhaps you see something on the Event Viewer log. My laptop does boot up, although I have to go through Advanced Options, Start Up Options and choose Option 7 "....disable drivers..."

    A hard drive has failed when you can no longer boot from it, since you can still boot from it the hard drive hasn't failed. Although the hard drive hasn't failed, it is recommended to handle before boot issues occur.
    That is as an answer to your question.

    Okay, commcation problem. Many thanks. FYI, the laptop (and harddisk) is 6 years old and has seen much traveling by car and foot. It has served me exceedingly well considering my late introduction to (and inexperience of) pc's (also 6 years). Will research my best option, possibly invest in new laptop.

    Also, it is possible I may have a virtual drive on my machine, which may explain the dr2/4x. All the best,
