    DNS Client Service Issue

    Hello.

After getting "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN" in many websites, I tried to fix this by restarting the DNS client service.

The problem is that there are no clickable buttons in the services window, and using cmd gives an error saying that the cammand was invalid and to obtain further support I should use "NET HELPMSG 2191". but no luck so far.

rolling back the whole windows settings is not an option for me.

    Windows: 10 Pro, Build 1909.

    :)

    Windows 10 DNS issues

This answer summarizes the research done by the poster and myself to analyze and
    fix the problem.

I describe here the sequence of actions that will (probably) fix the problem,
followed by my theory why it works.

Step 1 : Stop the the DNS Client service

    1. In the Start Menu of Windows, type services and click to run on Services
    2. Find the service named DNS Client
    3. Right-click the service and do Stop to stop it

Step 2 : Do network reset

    1. In the Start Menu of Windows, click on Settings
    2. Click on Network & Internet
    3. Click on Status
    4. Click Network reset
    5. Click Yes

A detailed description can be found in this article.
I believe that Network reset is probably equivalent to doing all the
re-initialization commands listed above in the post.

Step 3 : Restart the DNS Client service

Repeat Step 1, but do Start instead to restart the service.

If the problem still occurs, try to reboot Windows.

My theory as to why it works

Apparently some bad setting related to the DNS Client service was introduced
into Windows, which caused DNS to malfunction.
Network reset is normally sufficient to bring the network to a known state,
but in this case the bad setting could not be reset while the service was running. So the DNS Client service needed to be stopped for the Network reset
to successfully reinitialize all the DNS settings.

  3. Windows 10 Insider Preview 11082 - Connectivity Issue

    Hi Peter,

Sorry for the delay in response.

Check if the DNS Client service is disabled on your computer. If yes, I would suggest you to start the service and then check if you are able to connect to the internet.

To do so, follow these steps:

    • Press Win key + R, type services.msc, and then click
      OK.
    • In the list of services, click DNS Client.
    • Make sure that the Status column displays Started and the
      Startup Type column displays Automatic.
    • If the service is not set to Started or if the startup type for the
DNS Client service is not set to Automatic, follow these steps:
    • Right-click DNS Client, and then click Properties.
    • In the DNS Client Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then click
Automatic in the Startup type list.
    • Click Start, click Apply, and then click
      OK
      .

Let us know if this helps you in resolving the issue.

    Thank you.

  4. DNS Client Service Issue

Browser /connection security, hosts file and DNS service

You're saying that Open DNS(and other services like it) house their own list of known 'bad' sites, and by using their DNS servers, it will filter out sites based on that list?

Would you believe I was already using Open DNS servers.
This means the hosts file is moot?

And furthering that, if there's any bespoke sites I want to manually add, I could do it through my router directly.

Thus I can empty my local hosts file and turn my DNS service back on?
