I think that you missed my point because your post pretty much just repeated what my post had already said. Nobody really knows what Microsoft will send out on the 29th, it might be a complete new build or it might just be an update to build 10240. Only time will tell.

How about this wild guess. There's a large number of servers. They aren't all on the same IP address. The update program on your computer has been assigned an IP to go to and the date you are eligible downloaded in one of the many previous updates. The IP is based on your OS, if and when (!) you signed up for Win 10 and your product key. That would be a moderately simple process compared to designing the whole new OS.

Alternately its a free-for-all and the biggest DOS attack you've ever seen.

Well somebody missed someone's point *Tongue

Let me use the words of MS to try and clear up what I meant:

The above explicitly states that a 3GB download is required. That was what I was trying to say - should have just posted this instead of goofing around *Wink

I'm having a bit 'o fun in these last days so please don't take offense.

That actually settles nothing. Certainly, people who are upgrading from 7 or 8.1 are looking at a 3 G download. That says nothing about Insiders that have been running 10240 for a week and more.

So, I take it no one believes this article.

  7. Sigh, *Dohfrom that article, "Conjecture: Windows Insiders already have the “final” version of Windows 10." What is there to believe? It's just more conjecture. As he states " No, I can’t prove it.". Yes I believe he doesn't know either.

Did you read my post? I (and many others) think it likely that Insiders running 10240 essentially have the 'release' bits, when you consider all the updates. But something needs to happen on the 29th to turn it into the 'real deal'. It could be as simple as a small update that tweaks some internal markers, and then asks if you want to remain in Insiders or not.

  9. I'm one of the others that agrees with you. I just don't get the question of "do I agree with an article" that doesn't actually answer said question one way of another. Just more guess work. It's not the final release until Microsoft makes it the final release on the 29th. IMHO.

I know - the sheer amount of churning this issue is rather absurd. I think the suspense must be getting to some folks... *Wink

I agree with you. I think those of us with 10240 are just a couple of tweaks away from the RTM version. I don't expect a 3gb file to download to me in the next two days.

Everything looked reasonable until this last "Fact".
Fact: You’d have to be stone-cold crazy to install Windows 10 on a production machine on July 29

I am going to do exactly that on my new Dell XPS8700. Okay I do have full backup of ALL my files on a USB HDD and the other computer running Win 8.1 so maybe I'm only slightly crazy.

That is an odd statement though referring to the article not you CalBear37.

I am actually going to do that myself and I will see if I get a 3gb downloaded in the next few days. There are so many testers out there. I used 10240 for awhile as well.

  14. Nope, it says that the upgrade requires a 3 GB download.

10.0.240 is not the upgrade - that has also been explicit stated by MS. Couldn't find Abe's tweet, so this will have to suffice
    Tweet

    — Twitter API (@user) date[/quote]
It says nothing about GWX - which is downloading bits for the upgrade.

It also says nothing about a lot of things, whether the moon is made of cheese or not. *Wink

The thing people need to keep in mind is that the production release is different from the Insider releases. While the code will match for a short period of time, they are governed by different licenses, EULA, and terms of privacy.

I'm sure you've seen this flow chart that someone smarter than me took the time to work up.

Notice that if you installed a Preview release on top of a valid OS, you'll get the the upgrade.
Is it official from MS, nope.
    So here's something official:

Microsoft is working on stabilizing build 10240 for the general public. As evidenced by buildfeed.net, they are already up to 10508 internally. Once the launch campaign wines down, Windows Insiders will probably start seeing the first revision to Windows 10 in the near future.
