Windows 10: Do we need so many passwords

I know this subject has been raised before. John Struve did so in 2017 and never got an answer as far as I can see.


I have over seventy logins. One recommendation is that one should memorise, not write down, passwords. Good luck with that, especially since another recommendation is that they should not be memorable, e.g. they should contain a mixture of upper and lower case, numbers and special symbols. OK, then some apps do not accept some special characters or restrict the length of the word. Add to that

(1) the apps/organisations that insist on regular changes of passwords, and

(2) the forced changed after "losing" a password through too many attempts

and one is into heavy and difficult password management.


Recently I have had to set up bank accounts and, because of the increased security being introduced, I have ended up being locked out of the on line system. After visiting the bank a couple of times to unlock the accounts I gave up and now I visit the local branch to conduct manual transactions.


Then Microsoft puts the tin lid on it by locking me out of my MS Account, forcing me to wait 30 days, then use a new password.


Now when I have a new password or have to change one I opt for an easy one to cover all logins, i.e. I'm gradually reducing to just one easily remembered, short password. Not highly secure, but then I'm an ordinary private individual, not an employee in or the manager of some massive organisation with pots of money, so I can keep a much closer eye on my personal, single PC network.

Password issue

After going through the steps to make a new password, after a week or two, my login credentials are no longer valid. I'm forced to make a new password all over again. It seems to happen if I don't login in a certain period of time. Does our passwords expire???

You can reset your password following the next steps:

• Reboot your computer / Turn your computer on.
• Hold down the Shift key at the start of the boot process to enable the GNU GRUB boot menu (if it does not show)
• Press ESC at the GNU GRUB prompt.
• Press e for edit.
• Use the Arrow keys to highlight the line that begins with kernel and press the e key.
• Go to the very end of the line and add rw init=/bin/bash
• Press Enter and then press b to boot your system.
• Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.
• Type in passwd yourusername
• Set your new password.
• Restart your system.
