Windows 10: "Do you want to open this file" nonsense.

Windows 10 has a lot of annoying habits, and I'm finding new ones all the time. This particular one is driving me nuts: I have a bunch of .gif files stored locally on my hard drive. Every time I double-click on one of 'em to open it, I get prompted with this pop-up "Do you want to open this file?" Well, I did double-click on it... I guess I might, yeah. Duhhh...


I have not been able to find a way to turn off this "feature" anywhere in Windows. There IS a little checkbox in the popup you can check, that will prevent the popup from appearing FOR THAT FILE only. I'm looking for a way to tell Windows that if I want to open any .gif file on my hard drive to leave me alone and just open the damned thing, and stop jiggling my elbow and asking me if I'm sure.


I tried editing the Local Group Policy using gpedit.msc and yes, I'm well aware that gpedit is not included with Windows 10 Home Edition, yet another benighted decision by Microsoft... I found a way to get it installed and ran it, but the changes I made using it don't make any difference. User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Attachment Manager/"Do not preserve zone information in file attachments" and "Inclusion list for low file types." I enabled both and added ".gif" to the "file types" list. Rebooted. Still getting prompted with the popup.


Maybe I should be looking at the "Computer Configuration" rather than the "User Configuration"? Or is there a simpler way to turn off this annoying "feature" that I just haven't stumbled across yet?

opening .dds files with gimp

Simply, HOW? I got the DDS plugin but the POS wont open DDS files still. Can someone give me a step-by-step rundown of how to install the DDS plugin for gimp so I know if I'm missing something?

 

PowerPoint file crashes PowerPoint upon opening

since this happens in some of the computers only, suggest that you open the file on working computer and copy everything and paste to a new powerpoint file.
most of the time it works to me. *Smile

1. Since when are you facing this issue?
2. Have you made any changes on your computer, prior to this issue?

To fix issues with Word documents opening slowly, I suggest you to attach a different template to the document and check if that helps. Follow the below steps to attach a templates.

Steps:-

1. Open Word application.
2. Click on File and select Options.
3. Select Add-Ins from the list.
4. Under Manage Select Templates and click on
   Go.
5. In the pop up, type Normal in the Document template.
6. Click on Ok.

To fix issues with Adobe files opening slowly follow the below troubleshooting steps and check if that helps.

Steps:-

1. Open Adobe application.
2. Click on Edit.
3. Select Preferences option.
4. Tap on General.
5. Uncheck Enable protected mode at startup.
