  3. I've never understood why you'd want to trust software to move your data over, when no one (or not app) will know where you keep your data better than you. I wouldn't want a wizard guessing at my file locations when I know exactly where I keep anything and everything important. Does Easy Transfer do something more than this?

I realize not everyone knows where their files are (like most people in my company), but those aren't the people who would be doing an OS upgrade themselves.

Certainly, almost everyone I know doesn't know where their files are ("You mean to say I have files?"). When moving people to a new computer I have to spend quite a while hunting them out. Last one I did had photos in a temp folder off appdata!

  5. If I'm upgrading someone else's computer, I take an image of the entire hard drive, so I can pull out something we didn't get right away. I first back up their files from all the usual places, then follow that up with an image in case something is forgotten. Then I do the upgrade and restore the files I found, keeping the image for later use when I get the call that something is missing. I do this in a corporate setting and personal.

I do that as well. Nice to have the backstop!

This saved a business a couple of years ago when, after cleaning out all the many infections, I discovered their business files were in a deleted temp folder buried about five levels down!

Does anyone know where I can download the 64 bit files for the migwiz folder and the migration folder. Seems I only have 32 bit computers with Windows 7 around here *Sad

If you're just migrating data files then I would agree, using Easy Transfer gains little. But when you want to migrate apps, where stuff is stored in pieces all over the place, including registry files, you really need an app that can hunt all of those down, package them, and copy them for you. Migrating apps is the key value I see to using the third-party apps.

Totally agree ! It's been so dang long since MS and other market forces put those out of business, I can't even remeber the one I used years ago. Seems to me I lost the thread somewhere during Windows 95. Will have to have a catch up look at LapLink.

Availability of something like that would make a born again clean install freak out of me.*Nerd

  12. That free version is PCMover Express -- and it does NOT transfer applications. To do that, you need PC Mover Pro -- I know because I tried it, confirmed it does not transfer apps, contacted Laplink -- and was told about PC Mover Pro -- which is NOT free.

  13. Does 10 have anything like "Windows Easy Transfer" yet?

This was written back in March, long before folks started using the Win10 Upgrade tool -- which is HOW MS wants folks to transfer stuff from Win7/8/8.1 to Win10.

  15. True, my mistake, although I did say "a limited" version. The PRO version is $19.95 and it does transfer applications.
