Does two partitions on a HDD make your PC faster?

I'm making this post for my brother, who owns an HP gaming PC prebuilt.

I would like to make some improvements/modifications to make his PC faster, but first on the software side before upgrading hardware, if possible to save some money. If you have any other suggestions on how I can make his PC run better in games and tasks, please let me know!

I'd go for hardware upgrades, but that is for another day, and I've never worked inside this prebuilt.

    The specs are as follows:

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 1700

    RAM - 16GB DDR4 2667 MHz

    GPU - AMD RX 550 4GB

    Storage - 1TB HDD

Back to the main idea of this post.

The one main thing bogging down his PC is his HDD. Of course, like typical HDDs, they tend to be slow and are more unreliable than SSDs. Unfortunately, this prebuilt did not come with an SSD, so he's been stuck with a HDD for the 15 months he's had the PC.

In Windows, you can separate a HDD into multiple partitions in Disk Management. By any chance, is performance faster if I split the HDD into two different partitions? One partition would house the OS and programs, while the other drive would house all the other content, such as his games and documents.

    Example:

    - Drive 1 250 GB: Windows 10 and Programs

    - Drive 2 750 GB: Games, Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc.

If not I'll go buy an SSD. I would like to know before making the purchase though. Even a little bit of performance improvement would be great!

    :)

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

    Hi Johan,

    It is possible that your
    HDD was unreadable
causing the error message to appear. We recommend that you perform these troubleshooting steps and check if there are any changes:

    • Shutdown
      your
      PC.

    • Unhooked
      the
      HDD
      and
      turn on
      your
      PC.

    • Reconnect
      your
      HDD
      and
      restart
      your
      PC.

If the issue persists, we suggest that you contact your
    laptop/computer's manufacturer
    for further assistance.

Update us on how it goes.

    Regards.
