    Dolby Atmos Initialization Delay

Let me be clear, I'm not talking about an audio delay where the audio is out of sync with the video. Everything works perfectly, except that there is a 2-3 second delay before sound will become audible after a period of silence. When using Atmos, it looks like the computer is only outputting a sound signal over HDMI when sound is actually playing. You can see the receiver perceives no signal from the computer during silence. Then, when you begin to play a video, for example, the video will start but you won't hear any sound for 2-3 seconds while the computer's signal is detected and whatever required "handshake" occurs between the two devices. Then the receiver lights up and indicates an inbound surround signal and you hear the audio after missing 3 seconds of whatever you were watching. After sound stops, it takes about 3-5 seconds before the receiver again indicates it is no longer receiving an audio signal. If this occurs, you are back to square one and there will be a delay before you hear audio again.

Is this a natural part of whatever technology is outputting the Atmos signal? It seems to me that there must be a way to have a continuous signal out of the computer, even when there is no sound playing, so that the connection doesn't have to reset every time sound starts up. My other devices like the Xbox don't seem to exhibit this behavior.

Any help or confirmation of this behavior from anyone out there would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!
