Windows 10: Don't have permission to access E hard drive and its folders, and there is no Security Tab

Hi, last night I was trying to get into files on my E:\ Hard Drive when I found that it was no longer there, it was showing up as E:?. I did some googling and managed to find out it was a Lost Partition, I got it to show up again in my file explorer using cmd prompt but I cannot access it, when I try to it says to use the Security Tab, but when I click the link it shows no Security Tab. I have already tried Advanced Sharing with no luck at all. I had a lot of pictures saved in my E hard drive so I really need it back.

You don't have permissions to save in this folder

Which folder are you trying to save to?

If you aren't using the true administrator there will be certainly places you can't save to, or even access unless you manually change the security permissions to allow yourself access.

 

Change permission to internal hard drive and now cannot access it.

I changed the permission to a second internal hard drive. My exact steps:

1. right click hard drive

2. properties

3. security tab

4. Selected Users from the "group or user names:"

5. Selected deny for "read and execute", "list folder contents", and "read" under "permissions for users"

6. clicked ok

Now I do not have access to the hard drive as administrator or the guest account.

When checking the security properties in an effort to change my mistakes, I see the following.

"you must have read permissions to view the properties of this object"

clicking advance says

"you must have read permissions to view the properties of this object. click continue to attempt the operations with administrative permissions"

clicking continue says

"you do not have permission to view this objects security properties, even as an administrative user. To try to take ownership of the object, which includes permission to view its properties, click change above"

I don't want to cause anymore damage, if anyone can help me, it would be incredibly helpful. Thanks!

Click Start > File Explorer > This PC

Right-click on your External Drive, and choose Properties.

Go to Security tab.

Click Advanced, then Change Permissions.

Highlight the user, and click Edit.

Choose This folder, subfolders and files under Applies to:.

Choose Full Control under Basic Permissions.

Hit OK.

OR

Reset the drive permission:

Do this from the command line:

Open Start, type: CMD

Right click CMD

Click Run as administrator

Type in at the prompt OR Copy and Paste these one at a time : (Hit enter after each)

TAKEOWN /F D:\ /R /D Y

Once you have taken ownership, then you have to set the permissions; for this, you use ICACLS:

ICACLS "D:\" /reset /T

Note: D:\ would represent the name of your drive.
