Hi,

Only images downloaded via chrome produce this behavior? Ive seen this but not with Chrome before. I can try to assist.

Provide a list of extensions and programs installed on your system by following the steps below.

1. Open chrome and go to chrome://system
2. Click Expand under the extensions & mem_usage sections.
3. Copy and paste what you have in response.

Do the same for :
chrome://conflicts/

Next

1. Copy and paste the following into notepad. Then Go to ‘File > Save As..’ >
2. Change "Save as type" to *.* and name it Software.bat (Do not name it Software.bat.txt). The desktop is a good location.

Code: @echo off echo ================= >>software_list.txt reg export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall temp1.txt find "DisplayName" temp1.txt| find /V "ParentDisplayName" > temp2.txt for /f "tokens=2,3 delims==" %%a in (temp2.txt) do (echo %%a >> software_list.txt) del temp1.txt del temp2.txt REM type software_list.txt | more echo. echo. echo Installed software are stored in software_list.txt
3. Double click to run it then attach the file named "software_list" OR paste it's contents in response.

While I am looking at this we may as well delete the Windows thumbnail database files. This will make them refresh system wide and rule out them being corrupt in anyway.

1. Open notepad then copy and paste the following in Notepad.

Code: cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer attrib –h thumbcache_*.db del thumbcache_*.db start explorer
2. Open Task Manager by right-clicking the task bar then left-clicking Task Manager
3. Click "More details" at the bottom.
4. Go to the "Details tab> find each of the "explorer.exe" <-- should be more than one!
5. Select and "End Task"
6. Click File > "Run New Task"
4. Type CMD in the box making sure to check "Create this task with admin privileges"
5. Click OK or hit Enter
6. Individually copy then paste each line above into the new window pressing ENTER after each line once paste. (You can paste in the command line by right-clicking.)

Reboot.

Okay. A couple of concerns.

K-Lite codec pack includes Icaros. This provides Explorer thumbnails video formats. Look here: Shark007. At one point it caused the green thumbnail issue for all thumbnails, BUT that should have been fixed a while back. Their forum users are reporting multiple problems with the various versions of Windows (especially the latest release).

I generally advise against codec packs. They can be more of a pain than a help when something does generate a problem. I have never had a file that I could not play between Daum Player and VLC. No codec pack or extra buggy software needed.

I suggest removing the codec pack, Icaros, and using one or both of those media players.

You have multiple extensions, scripts, plug-ins, features apps that work on images and downloads:
PinDown Free
Pinterest Enhanced
Image Downloader
DownAlbum
IDM
SHINE for reddit
Allow Copy
Data Saver <-- compresses sites as you view them. Not sure how this effects images. You have extension that work against the purpose of this if it actually compresses images

How are you saving the images that are giving you problems?

1. Via right click "Save Image as..." or an extension? If yes to the extension or extrenal software... which one?
2. Would you mind providing a few links to pics giving you a problem?

If you are using the "Save Image as" context menu... disable "Allow Copy" and try it again.

While TamperMonkey and Stylish are only script managers.. the scripts used can have strange results. Are all the scripts and web styles used included in your previous attachments?

5. I removed K-Lite and Icaros. I also removed Allow Copy and Data Saver from Chrome.

I use both "Save image as...." and extensions. The result is the same either way. I normally use Image Downloader. I currently have no scripts installed.

This is one such site where I got green thumbnails (the stage map images).

I used K-Lite because I like Media Player Classic's ability to download subtitles automagically.

6. I use K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, but I always disable the "Thumbnail Preview" option.

I haven't noticed any issues, but I don't use awful Google Chrome either.

Ok. VM set with your version of Win10 & software that matches your installs minus the games. Not producing what you have. I'm sorry to say it could be something that is a combination of things specific to your system since I can't setup a system to repro with the same hardware.

Running SFC (sfc /scannow) or DISM (DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth) would be wasted effort. Anything broken in Windows would have been repaired during the "Repair Install". That means it's 99.99999999999998% not a Win10 issue.

What I have observed so far:

A strange point... Run the Software script again and see if something was left behind from Icaros. You have / had components from 2 versions at work there. When I downloaded the version 3.0.1 installer it installed matching builds it's components.

Icaros Property Handler 3.0.1.0 %programfiles%\icaros\64-bit\icarospropertyhandler.dll (Shell Extension -- Not loaded yet)
Icaros Thumbnail Provider 3.0.1.0 %programfiles%\icaros\64-bit\icarosthumbnailprovider.dll (Shell Extension -- Not loaded yet)

Yours is/was version 3.0.1 build 302 & build 301 respectively. <-Problem with using codec packs. They mix and match parts of software that should not be.

**side note: MPC-HC & MPC-Be should be able to play most files without the codec pack also. The subtitle feature is built into MPC and should be in the other editions since they just added features and built codecs into the other editions. ***

Looking through Chrome's list of bugs (active and resolved) similar things happened to some in the past.

One incident was hardware acceleration. Disabling it was a temporary fix. If that works for you then there is a problem between Chrome and NVIDIA.

Another two issues were the result of Google's implementation of some java scripts that Chrome relies on for image handling. One effected the gamut of images.

They were supposedly fixed.

You stated you've had this issue for a couple of years now.

Did it start with the system out of the box or after having it for a while?

Out of the box... sorry. Would have shipped it back under warranty.

If it started later... likely the versions of your GPU driver and Chrome not playing nice. Check the pc/laptop manufacture's site for drivers for your model. They are usually older that what Microsoft Update will force install.

I have a WiFi card on this Dell that will blue screen any and ALL versions of Windows 10 if the drivers are updated to the version that MS determines to be "the best". Rolling back to an older version solves the issue.

I had an older laptop that would run CAD and video editing software better than the latest machines of that time. I updated the video drivers and wanted to throw the thing against the wall. Rolling back fixed it.

1. Make sure "C:\Program Files (x86)\k-lite codec pack" is completely deleted.

2.Earlier you stated thing were fine with only 2 extensions installed. Go back to that. Clean Chrome completely from your system and start over. A single or combination of scripts could be at fault. They could be causing permanent issues with Chrome's own functions that deal with image handling.

Install the 1st 2 extensions again then test as previously advised.

3. Try Disable Hardware Acceleration in Chrome. If that helps you know it's a problem with Chrome and your drivers. You can roll back to an older version of them OR simply leave HW Acceleration disabled. I doubt this is the issue though.

Have you tried Chromium (Chrome's base source without the extras)? If so... does it happen after you install your usual extensions, apps, and plugins?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

The problem occurred after upgrading to Windows 10. It's been around a couple years. I've had the system for about 4 years now.

• Yeah, the folder's gone.
• I was, at first. I went back to just those two, and it persisted.
• No dice. Doesn't seem to affect anything.

I've tried Chromium, Canary, the Dev builds, and so on. Even on a clean install, the problem persists.

Well I'm at a loss. You may have one of those strange mix of software (possibly hardware) scenarios that creates the perfect in environment for this issue.

This what I was going to say in response but doubt it will help:

Code: Wow. You are patient. I would have wipe the system and started fresh or introduced it to a wall if that feature was of major use to me. Is this the sole machine you have to work on? If not... can you reproduce this on another workstation? Curious.. have you tried saving images while in Window's safe mode w/ networking? Does this happen in that mode? This eliminates tons of possible points of error as a simple step in trouble shooting. Do you allow Windows Update to install drivers? If so... check support for the workstation's manufacturer. They may have different or altered drivers for your video card. If they have a later version or more recent try them. <-- I think this is too much BUT I have seen drivers be a part of some of the most unique problems ever. DDU to clean driver traces if you decide to go this route change drivers. Download drivers before starting. 1. Follow Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10 2. Remove the drivers per the norm. 3. Reboot to safe mode w/ networking. 4. Run DDU. 5. Reboot. 6. Windows should install some very basic compatible drivers to get you started 7. Try saving a pic then. If it works something with Chrome and the drivers is a problem. 8. You can install the drivers from your workstations support site now. Do not install the extra stuff now... just the drivers. (Pay attention to the install. See if you are given the option to remove old setting / clean install / reset or something similar.) Save a pic and see the results. I say press Chrome support. Submit an official bug report @ Issues - chromium - An open-source project to help move the web forward. - Monorail. As stated... this is ONLY being reproduced in Chrome. Provide them with all the info in chrome://conflicts/ chrome://gpu chrome://system Zip some of the images doing this just in case someone ask for them.
Have you ever done a clean install of Windows or always been with the upgrade?

Seems the software script needs work. It's missing some apps since not all uninstall routines are stored where the script looks.

I don't think I'll have to do all that. I think I found the culprit. Either Icaros or Media Preview. I've uninstalled both and I haven't had a green image yet, though I haven't downloaded many images since then. I'll go to Reddit or Facebook and download some memes and see if anything goes awry. Though to be honest I'm a bit annoyed that my movie files are now icons instead of thumbnails like they were previously.... I'll test Media Preview again and see if the problem pops up again.

11. Yeah, it seems it was Icaros. I haven't downloaded a single green image, even with Media Preview installed (though I only configured it for video files).
