  1. DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION without clear cause

    Hey guys,

Since a few days I'm getting a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION bluescreen here and there. I have gotten my first such bluescreen right after I had switched my old Phenom II 4X 945 for a FX 8350. My first thought was that something had gone wrong with the new CPU. After googling the specific bluescreen message, I was told that it typically was caused by some faulty driver though. Many pointed to the HDD possibly having problems or any other hardware connected to the PC possibly having some issue, causing the devices drivers to misbehave. While I at first didn't think that this would just randomly coincide with the new CPU, I later noticed that these problems did not appear at times when my Headset (a Sennheiser GSP 350) was not connected to the PC.

For example, with my Headset connected, starting the game Europa Universalis IV would cause massive lag, my mouse would freeze with only short times here and there being movable. If I didn't close the window of the game, the computer would crash to said bluescreen after some time.

Further testing showed practically identical results with the game Hearts of Iron IV. Yet, Crusader Kings II, a game made with the same engine and by the same developer, didn't cause any of this. At this point the only difference I could notice was, that CK2 did not have any music in its launcher, while the other two games did. After trying all of these games again with my headset unplugged, they worked as intended.

At this point I was convinced that the problem came from some fault with the headsets drivers and the fact that it happened together with the new CPU might just be a coincidence. Anyways, after completely wiping the main partition of my drive, I reinstalled Windows 10. I connected my Headset again, installed its drivers, set everything else up and it seemed like my problem was solved. I was playing EU IV for at least an hour with no problem. Later on, I had been tabbed out of the game and when I tabbed back in, I was met with the same problems as I had before I reinstalled. Up to now, I was unable to replicate this with my headset plugged in.

As it stands now, I still am considering the CPU as a possible problem, as I believe not to have had this specific bluescreen error at any time prior to the installation of the new CPU. Though signs point in the direction of my headset. I will experiment a bit more with the named games and my headset and make an edit if I manage to replicate the bluescreen. In the meantime, I would really appreciate some help with identifying the cause of these problems. As I have absolutely no experience with analyzing dumps, I would be very thankful if anyone could look at mine and maybe tell me what they could find out through it.

Thank you very much for reading this far,

  2. Clear Pagefile on Shutdown

I've been looking into clearing the pagefile, and I found the following steps at a somewhat dated webpage:
    • In the registry editor, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
    • Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown to the REG_DWORD value of 1.
    • Restart Windows.
I'm just wondering whether those steps are still valid, and, if so, does clearing the pagefile work as advertised?

    Hi,

It is possible that the error DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION may occur if the iastor.sys driver is incompatible with Windows 10. To isolate your issue, we'd like to gather more information:

    • Have you made any recent changes before this issue occurred?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

Any response will be highly appreciated.

    DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION

    Hi Mattie,

The DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION blue screen error can be caused by a variety of hardware, firmware, driver, or software issues. Now, you mentioned that you already changed the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to standard. Did you update the driver as well? And also,
are you getting the same blue screen error when you play other games? Or is it only occurring when you play a particular game?

For the mean time, if you haven't tried any further troubleshooting steps, we suggest that you perform the suggested steps from this article:
