  1. Drive C and Drive D going bananas

Sorry for the format, I'm on mobile.

So I recently got a PC with drive C having roughly around 20ish GB unused storage while drive D having around 130GB. After that I installed steam and PUBG. C and D went down to 16GB and 98GB respectively. Three weeks after that, I got another game, Insurgency: Sandstorm. That made drive C going down to 11.3GB of free space and drive D with roughly 60GB of free space.

The first day was fine, but the next day was when things started going bananas. Drive C went down to 1GB free space left while drive D went up to 140GB. I refreshed the page multiple time and at the same time the free space also went down rapidly, as low as 400MB. I panicked so I closed everything and restarted the PC. At first I thought there were some virus but luckily there wasn't (confirmed it twice by doing two full scans). I never installed anything outside of steam so I don't think there are any malicious files from downloaded corrupted software.

Right now, drive C is at 1.57GB free space while drive D is at 157GB free space. What do you think is the culprit here and is it dangerous to the system as whole? Quite worried because there are some important files and expensive software that belongs to my father.

  2. No C: but D: drive has all the data

    Hi Austin,

To help you with your concern regarding the data on the drive C:, you're seeing the drive "C:" as the drive "D:" because you're booting your computer outside Windows. When booting your computer outside Windows, the system is reading the recovery partition
as drive C: and the data in the drive C: \ are listed on the drive D: \. Try to boot your computer and try to check again the data in the drive C: \ and see if the data are listed.

    Regards.

  3. D drive

    Hi,

Based on the details you have provided us, it appears that there might be some corrupted contents on the said partition. We can also consider that this is caused by a virus.

For us to check if a certain virus is hiding your files, kindly follow the steps below:

    • Type Command prompt in the search bar.
    • Type-in the following command:

      attrib -h -r -s /s /d D:\*.*
    • Press Enter to execute the command.

If you think that there is nothing important stored in it, then we suggest that you reformat your D drive so that you can use the free space for important files.

You can follow the steps below to start with the process:

    • Click on the File Explorer.
    • Select This PC.
    • Right-click on your D drive, then click on Format.
    • Follow the on-screen process to finish formatting the partition.

Let us know how it goes so that we can further assist you.

  4. Drive C and Drive D going bananas

    C Drive vs. D Drive

Hello--looking for some assistance with designating storage to the D drive on my computer.

I have the settings arranged so that all new download content is supposed to go to the D drive--music, etc.--but it is still going to the C drive anyway.

    Thanks for any help!
