    I have this (fairly) old hard drive that was previously in my laptop, and that appeared to be unsalvageable. I recently bought a drive bay for my laptop, and plugged in the old drive and tried to get it to work again. Upon installation and trying to open the drive, Windows Explorer, along with my background and start menu, crashed. With further investigation, I found that almost any contact with the drive withing GUI crashes something/everything.
    After quite some fiddling around, I got diskmgmt to open, along with diskpart. Attached are the screenshots of both setups, and here are the following errors provided with the various actions done to produce them:
    DELETE PARTITION IN DISKMGMT: I/O Error (something along those lines)
    CLEAN DISK IN DISKPART: DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. See the System Event Log for more information.
    Attached is also my System Event Log from the past, idk, week or two, all of this mumbo-jumbo happened 1/8/2018.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    portable usb drive is not recognized by windows 10

    small hand-held 8 GB usb drive is not recognized in windows 10. the windows system makes music upon insertion but the drive does not show up in the explorer.

    5800 not waking up!

    u can use any method tat suits u, it doesnt matter but dont format to RAW, because the device wont read RAW format, do a FAT32 format, if CMD is hard for u, please switch to explorer mode format, easy and GUI mode, no need typing..

    It sounds like the DISK is indeed damaged and the Firmware on the DRIVE is having trouble communicating with Windows (ie IO Errors) but it is possible it is one of the other Issues that Cause disks to show as RAW

    DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO FORMAT IT as you will lose everything...... do some googling and you will find numerous posts on this issue and even many here as Win10 was causing it at one point too. eg:
