  1. Dual Boot Issues

I'm in a Networking Class and my Teacher had the wonderful idea of dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 10 Pro. Things were okay until last night when I booted my machine I'm stuck in the grub rescue. Now at some point I didn't actually uninstall Linux but deleted the partition. I tried to use my Win10 rescue disk but it won't work. Is there a way out of this to get back into my Windows without having to reformat/reinstall?

    Thanks

    :)

  2. Dual Boot Issue

If that's the Windows Boot Menu then those extra listings should not appear and may have been forced by deleting the WinRE Recovery partition. Anything on that menu should also be able to be set or hidden in mscsonfig>Boot tab or if not there on

EasyBCD (click Download - no Name or Email required)
Edit OS Menu tab. If not there then they are anomalous and I'd ignore them. Note that neither location actually deletes these devices themselves but only their listing on the boot menu.

I'd leave the 450mb alone for now since even if you use a tool like Partition Wizard which can borrow empty space from anywhere on the hard drive, this would move the EFI System partition and hidden MSR partition (which would show up if there in PW) and
    risk no-boot situation until repaired.

    When ready to do a
    Clean Install Windows 10
be sure to delete all partitions down to Unallocated Space so that it recreates the Recovery partition where is stored the onboard WinRE repair console. Until then use the Windows 10 bootable media or Recovery Drive for booted
    repairs.

  3. Dual Boot Issue

Hi I just checked my bios settings and booted back into windows 10 witch was a lot faster.

It only seems to take 3 minutes to load windows 10 after using windows 8.1

Here are my current bios settings...

    Boot options.

    secure boot control - disabled

    load legacy oprom - enabled

    keyboard errors - report

    usb boot support - enabled

    boot menu security - disabled

boot mode - UEFI (the other option is Legacy)

    Dual Boot Issues

If Startup Repair (Windows bootable install medium) doesn't work, then try Macrium Reflect's Fix Boot utility (on their boot disk - also on Kyhi's very useful boot disk - from the top of the Software and Apps section here).

However I should wait for guidance from someone familiar with dual booting Linux.

That MR Rescue or Kyhi's Rescue is the go-to fix for these things, but I'd be curious to see what this looks like. If all he did was delete the Ubuntu partition, the config may still show in MSCONFIG, and just needs to be deleted and re-boot. It may fix itself. Just a thought.....

    Example only:

    Dual Boot Issues

It may be easier to use Kyhi's disk, 'cos to get M Reflect's boot medium, you first have to install Macrium. On the other hand, Macrium will then do the work for you creating a bootable USB drive.

Kyhi's disk is a very useful tool to have, with a range of software as you can see from the screenshot and list.

Note how to create a bootable drive from an iso file:

    - you can burn a DVD (easy)
    or
    - create a bootable drive
    Creating a bootable USB drive.

    with thanks to @NavyLCDR
To reliably make a bootable USB flash drive from an ISO file, do this:

Plug the drive into a USB port of a functioning Windows PC.

    Open a command prompt.
    Run diskpart.

Once diskpart is running, enter the following commands in sequence:

    list disk
    select disk #
    - replace # with the actual disk number of the USB flash drive
    clean
    - this will erase the selected drive, make sure it is the USB flash drive!
    create part pri
    format fs=fat32 quick
    active
    exit
    exit

    Then mount your ISO file.
(By default you can simply right click the iso file, and click Mount. However, Mount will not be available if iso files have been associated with a different program).

Copy all the files and folders from the mounted ISO file to the USB flash drive.

(If stuck you can open the iso with 7-zip, a free program).

    Discussion here:
Reinstall Windows 10 from DVD but no DVD drive
    - includes content of flash drive.

    Running Macrium Fix Boot
Boot your PC from the boot drive, and you should see a desktop display. Start Macrium Reflect. Under the restore menu, select the utility

    Fix Windows boot problems.

Is this your own PC ?

Why are you using your PC ?

You should be using the one`s at the school and the teacher should be helping you with this problem.

According to his specs, it's his machine, custom built. Desktop. He doesn't say so directly, but I suspect the Networking Class is Online.

Unless he is using a laptop not mentioned or listed. Home or school.
