  1. Dual booting set up in System Configuration

Just getting to grips with W10 and noticed that dual booting can be set up in System Configuration-boot. This was the case in XP, I think or was a previous version. Bit late now as I have easybcd on W7 drive. Before you ask I have never had a successful install where W10 finds W7 and displays that fancy box on start up.

    :)

System must start twice to run

    Hi,

What are the options it gives with the Dual Boot window ?

There is a setting in System Configuration (msconfig) BOOT Tab, where you can modify the Boot menu at startup...

Right click on the Start button and scroll down to the "run" command line option to type in "msconfig" and press enter as always!

What you see there is from the latest Windows Insider Preview build. You still see the manual option in 10 as well as seen with the previous versions since it still ends up getting plenty of use at times! *Biggrin

You can also change the default OS while you are at it seeing the previous version made the default and even moving that to the top in case you decided fo see additional boot options for the Safe Mode, Safe Mode with command prompt, and Safe Mode with Network options added in. That keeps the previous version's option separated even if not set as the default. How to Add Safe Mode to Boot Options in Windows 10

Do you mean a dual boot screen W7/W10 with GUI interface ? if so:

Boot up Windows 10. Open Admin Command Prompt and type:
    bcdboot %windir%
Reboot. You should see the GUI interface

  6. "Boot configuration successfully created" is what you will actually end up seeing! That's a command to set the Windows directory as the boot directory by default.

As for EasyBCD you can add the boot entry for 7 into the BCD store once you have the drive letter all set and sometimes may see the 8, 8.1, 10 style OS button type selector following a hard start if some program locks up. You have to be on the 10 side of a dual boot however when that happens. Following the bugged up initial upgrade where I had to find out the other drives needed to be unplugged I unplugged the 7 and still saw the dual boot with 10 work once the latest version was found to be in need and downloaded. You will notice the 10 Safe Mode options are below the 10 entry as described earlier while having 7 right at the top and set as the default OS.

With 10 it seems bringing up the F8 boot/advanced repair screen does tend to be a bit more touchy then seen with the older versions. With a dual boot set up it's gets even worse at times trying to hit the F8 at just the right moment and keep tapping it otherwise hit the Reset button!

  7. Didn't work for me, sorry. Maybe if I had EasyBCD on Win 10 it might but I don't want that on Win 10, it's on W7 and works fine.

There's not one problem having the latest 2.2 version of EasyBCD on both 7 and 10. It allows you to reconfigure things on the fly rather then the need to boot back into 7 while in 10 if you decide to change which is default or the boot option time for example which is also seen in the msconfig boot tab.

But one thing you should know about now is you can not add a 10 boot entry into the 7 BCD store! SORRY! This is another reason for having the program installed on 10 in case you need to replace or add a new 7 entry in there! You can't see that done with the msconfig tool. With 10 as the newer of the two versions as well as being limited unlike adding 8 into 7 or 7 into Vista with the earlier versions you are stuck working with the 10 BCD!

  9. Installed easyBCD on W10, get GUI interface sometimes and it shows Fedora(Linux) as well. I have added W10 to W7 easyBCD and it works. Not really a big problem, just like things to work as advertised.

    How about try again with:
    bcdboot %windir%

But this time, boot up Windows 7

  11. I found that out fast when first setting up the 10240 when downloading that not having been able to get to other the TP build out in January that was on a VM until going for the latest version of VM Player that was out back in July. Once 10 was on the older 2.0 version of EasyBCD was obsolete and no effort to add any entry into the 7 BCD was obvious from being three versions newer while the previous dual boot between the 8 CP and 7 was a disaster area! That was why the 10 build went onto a VM!

It's still all too easy to see 7 made the default OS as well as see the entry moved to the top of the OS choices list even on the new 10 boot options screen you run into at times. The boot tab in the msconfig there can reassign which is default, change how long the boot options will be displayed, and even rename the entries from W10 Pro to Windows 10 Professional depending how you want it to appear. The 7 entry was moved to the top since the Safe Mode boot options were added into the 10 BCD as well as the entry for 7 where you would want them under the 10 entry while not seeing 7 placed in between?

At first there the original concern that a 10/7 dual boot might end up seeing the same disk errors problem that ended up seeing both 7 and the 8 CP seeing clean installs for 7 and the PC Refresh option seeing 7 added into *'s BCD after 8 had been added into the 7 for the dual boot across drives which still remained stand alone OS drives by the way! The 10 drive previously having seen the 8 CP as well as a distro or two in the gap is now replugged in using the previously 7 drive;s data cable and set first in the bios as well as now being the Disk 0 Host/Boot drive with 7 still being the default OS for the present time. Been using EasyBCD since the Vista/XP dual boot days.
