Windows 10: dual monitor worked, but not now. Nothing changed.

I have a laptop windows 10 connected to two monitors, a Dell and an Asus. Dell is via VGA, Asus is via HDMI. both were working fine in dual monitor mode. I used the HDMI port to connect to a LG TV, worked fine. I simply disconnected the HDMI cable and reconnected the HDMI cable to the ASUS. No signal detected.. If I disconnect the Dell VGA cable, the ASUS HDMI monitor works. When I reconnect the Dell VGA, the Dell works and the ASUS HDMI says no input signal. This really shouldn't be rocket science. it worked, now it doesn't. Windows 10 style. Any idea how to get back into dual monitor mode here? And please, no bios, drivers, etc. I've rebooted, turned stuff on and off. like I say, the HDMI monitor works if I disconnect the VGA, so no cable issues. but when I try to detect the ASUS monitor, it says it can't. Sheesh.

• Which Windows 10 build are you using?
• Have you already tried performing the troubleshooting steps suggested by
  Mauro Cavallin on June 16, 2017?
• Are both of the monitors not working just like what the original poster was experiencing? If yes, have you tried disconnecting one of the monitors? What was the outcome?
• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

Trouble with 2 monitors

I suggest you to change the settings to Extended Monitor and check if it helps.

Please follow below steps:

• Right Click any ware of the Desktop, and launch Personalization.
• Go to dual monitor settings under personalization, and change it Extended Monitor.
