Windows 10: Dual monitors error message "Didn't detect another display"

If so it looks like it is on board graphics rather than a separate plug in card. You do need the proper driver for the AMD Radeon R5.

I have the 152L, but the back looks identical. What is the proper driver, since the one I have is supposedly up to date? And once I have the proper driver, how do I switch to the AMD since it currently seems to be running on the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter? Or am I missing something?

 

You need to install the latest Catalyst Driver for AMD Radeon which you will find on the AMD website. Once loaded W10 will then automatically use it.

It didn't work at first, and so then in pure desperation I downloaded a bunch of things from HP Support Assistant and took a nap, and lo and behold, when I woke up, I had an extended screen. Right now I don't even want to make any changes, but one new thing that downloaded is "AMD Gaming Evolved," which I suspect is somehow involved.

 

I uninstall that on my laptop. Doing that hasn't caused me any issues that I know of. As far as I know it just helps with gaming profiles. Leaving it installed shouldn't hurt either. I don't game on my laptop so I uninstall it. I run dual displays on my laptop but my second monitor is USB via DisplayLink.

 

Damn it. Display #2 stopped working today. This time, it is not picking up a signal at all. Strange thing is, instead of the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, I am now seeing Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 under "Display adapters." When the second monitor started working earlier this week, I don't remember checking and am thus unsure whether this changed before or after monitor #2 stopped working.
I now have an Intel HD Graphics Control Panel, and the menu has a "Multiple Displays" alternative, but when I click on it, the only option given is "Single Display" with a supremely annoying check mark to the left, as though I have any choice.
If anyone has a clue what is going on, please share.

 

By the way, am I the only one who thinks it is insane that there is no built in trouble shooter for this? When I go to Display settings, shouldn't there be a little box saying "Is a second monitor not being detected? Click here to trouble shoot" or something to that effect? But I am left with absolutely no recourse. Come on, Microsoft.

 

You must have an APU (not sure what Intel calls it) and the onboard GPU. My laptop has an AMD A-10 APU, its a CPU and GPU on the one die/chip. It also has an onboard AMD GPU. AMD Radeon HD 7660G + 7670M, dual graphics. It can switch on the fly between the two depending on whether you need the extra power for gaming etc, or power saving using the APU. That goes back to my recommendation to install the Custom HP driver that should be able to handle the dual graphics. It sounds like yours switched back to the Intel APU, which doesn't have the ability to run dual displays.

 

What was the Custom HP driver? Where can I get it?I tried downloading an update via HP Support Assistant, but it is unclear whether it's installed already or not.I get a message saying:"Installation completeFailed installation: Intel Graphics Driver UMA-Skylake-Win10 (64-bit)-FXN"It still shows up as an update that can be downloaded and installed, but I've gotten the same message six times now.

 

Go to the support page for your make and model on the HP site. Then look through the list of drivers for a video driver. If you find one, download and install it manually.

Looking at the list of drivers, I'm not sure that is going to help? I see AMD, Intel, and NVidia listed. Not what I was expecting? If it was a laptop there would be just the one driver. It's a desktop PC so they list the drivers for all the different options it might have shipped from the factory with. I'm just as confused as you are now? I don't know what you do now?

 

I think this link refers to the correct model but the drivers are the same and I would install the AMD graphics one dated yesterday (Jul 8). It might not hurt to install some of the other system drivers too as they are all recently updated.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help. Philc43, the page you linked to seems very promising, but right now the downloads do not work properly. Maybe too much traffic. Hopefully it will work better when I try again tomorrow.

 

The physical HDMI connection seems to have been somehow at fault, because after re-inserting the cables, the extended screen is now back. I was going to contact HP via their website, and they required a serial number, which I had to get off the bottom of my tower, and after turning it back on its keel and powering up, neither of my monitors lit up, which led me to pull out all the cables in the back, re-insert them and then boot up, at which point both monitors came back on.I swear I checked and double checked both HDMI cables (which are brand new high end cables), and they were firmly inserted, but it seems they are just very sensitive and prone to disruption at even minor upsets, at least in my experience when running the HDMI feed from laptop to TV.
